I must say this is caramel pecan slow cooker french toast casserole is one is the most insanely delicious desserts I have ever made, and it’s SO easy too! If you follow The Typical Mom at all you know I’m a bit obsessed with crockpot recipes so this one is made in that which makes it perfect for holidays like Christmas morning (or any time really)! Slow Cooker French Toast Recipe

I know….and yes it tastes as amazing as it looks (actually better). Had most of the ingredients at home (which is my kinda’ recipe) but instead of a regular loaf of bread I have used before when I’ve made my caramel apple bread pudding, I instead used Hawaiian sweet rolls!

You kind of layer it like a lasagna once you have everything mixed together, turn it on and it is done in 2/5-3 hours. Think about Christmas morning or if you are having guests over for brunch. You may want to make a baked breakfast casserole but you know that is always full with other items needed for later that day.

Let’s talk a little bit about slow cooking shall we?? First off I have a few different varieties and I love them all. Each one has an occasion to be used like….

  1. This is my favorite 6 quart programmable one with a locking lid so it’s great for bringing to a potluck too.
  2. I prefer not to use liners, but rather just spray olive oil inside before adding my food for easier cleanups.

Let me give you a peek of my pretty thang I bought recently. It goes with my kitchen so I can just leave it out on the countertop all the time. ๐Ÿ˜‰

A floral design slow cooker with a white base and lid sits on a kitchen countertop, perfect for whipping up a 5 ingredient crockpot chili recipe.

Crockpot French Toast Cream Cheese

It literally only takes maybe 10 minutes to put it all together, turn it on while you’re chatting or opening presents and then this caramel pecan french toast casserole is done! For the frosting I would just microwave a tub of cream cheese frosting for 30 seconds and pour on top of each serving. Here is the printable recipe.

Ingredients

  • Bread – I like Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • Milk or dairy free alternative works
  • Room temperature eggs
  • Brown sugar makes it sweet
  • Butter or plant based sticks are fine
  • Cinnamon we like
  • Add ins can be crushed pecans or other nuts, or a dash of vanilla extract

It is scrumptiously sweet and SO easy to make. Serve as is or with some apple butter on the side. If you don’t have a large crockpot this is my favorite one. The only item you may have trouble finding but can order are caramel bits (I use them all the time). Enjoy my friends!

If you don’t have a slow cooker you can make this overnight casserole in your oven using French or thick sandwich bread. We make cake mix brownies too if you want to make a few easy treats for your large get together.

How to Make Slow Cooker French Toast Casserole

  • Cube sweet rolls, loaf of stale bread loaf or french bread (I used 1.5 of the 2 packages of sweet rolls), set aside.
  • Combine milk, eggs, and 1 pinch cinnamon in a bowl, whisk together.
  • Combine brown sugar, 1 pinch cinnamon, pecans, and caramel bits in another bowl.
  • Put crockpot on low and lay half of your bread cubes on the bottom and pour melted butter on top of this layer.
  • Put 1.5 c. of egg milk mixture on top of this layer
  • Sprinkle some of the brown sugar mixture on top of your bread mixture too.
  • Add the remaining cubed bread, then egg mixture, then brown sugar mix, then one more layer with the brown sugar mixture left on top.

How long to cook French toast in slow cooker?

You are going to cover and cook on low for 2.5-3 hours cooking time or until egg is cooked which means it is no longer wet and has stiffened. The outsides will be firmer than the center no matter what. Check the middle with a knife. If it comes out with moist crumbs attached you’re ready!

Slow Cooker Bread Pudding Casserole

I would kinda’ compare this to our Crockpot bread pudding you see here. This one I added pumpkin puree into the egg mixture because it was Fall time.

When done it is certainly sweet enough but adding a bit of moisture on top is nice. You can do this with whipped cream which will melt and goo all over. A drizzle of maple syrup works well too though. I like fresh fruit diced up if I have some on hand for a breakfast recipe. Could easily be served for dessert though.

How to reheat leftover french toast casserole?

You can do this in your microwave if you only have a few pieces left over. If this is the case put it on a plate with a drizzle of cream or syrup on the top to add moisture. Put a paper towel over the top to trap the steam a bit. Heat for 45 seconds to 1 minute or until warmed to your liking. If you have half of your pan or more left you should;

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F or 175° Celcius
  2. Take the covered pan out of the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for at least 15 minutes to take the chill off.
  3. Drizzle syrup over the top to moisten, or sprinkle some milk on top alternatively.
  4. Cover the dish with aluminum foil to prevent the top from getting too brown or dry during reheating.
  5. Place the covered casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until it is heated through and the center is no longer cold.
  6. Remove the foil from and continue baking for another 5-10 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Once fully heated and golden brown on top, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

As when it was cooked and served fresh I still think the best way to enjoy it is with some fresh fruits on the top too. Adds from freshness to an otherwise heavier dish for sure. Another way to enjoy it is to dice up leftovers, whisk an egg with cinnamon, toss in there and fry up in a pan sort of like a deconstructed French toast with bread pieces.

  1. Hi! I’m so excited to make this for my fellowship group! My crockpot does not have a “Low” setting. It has “4”, “6”, “8”, or “10” hours…..will the 4 hour setting be too long?

  2. In the video you added a teaspoon of a white granulated ingredient, but it isn’t listed in the ingredients. Does anyone know what that was?

    1. OH it’s just 1 tbs. sugar…not absolutely necessary as it is sweet enough as it is. Sorry.

  3. This looks wonderful! Is the crockpot set on low or high for the 2 1/2 – 3 hours?
