Crispy Air Fryer Apple Fries

I guess you could call them fried apples too but you don’t cook them in oil. When you air fry you will get the same crisp but just wit a light spray instead. We began this journey with our air fryer apple fritters recipe. That was good but a bit more prep actually. I suggest you try them both.

Everything is better with a little “batter” of sorts. As I have shared before you cannot use a wet mixture, but with a bit of oil to get the seasoned flour to stick it’s a close second.

Tips: My Favorite models are the Cosori or making Ninja Foodi recipes with the lid that is attached.

It is best practice to put food into a hot basket. This is how to preheat air fryer first before adding your food so it becomes as crispy as possible. For best results, here’s a printable free air fryer cooking time chart here for your fridge.

A close-up photo of a hand pulling out the basket of an open air fryer on a light-colored surface. The interior of the air fryer basket is empty and features a mesh design, perfect for cooking your favorite dishes like bang bang shrimp. The edge of the air fryer has a latch mechanism for securing the basket.

Ingredient Notes

You want to sprinkle cinnamon sugar with flour mixture to stick on the outside if you want a sweet “breading” of sorts. Add as many seasonings into that mix that you want. Pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice would be fun in there too.

Peeled, sliced and cored apples are the main item of course. The thicker you cut them the longer the cooking time will need to be to soften.

All purpose flour will create a light breading if you want to make the “fried” version. And you will want some olive oil cooking spray to brown the top of your apple slices

I would recommend using an oil that has a very light or no flavor at all. If you don’t you won’t be able to taste the sweetnesses as much. Which oils are flavorless? The best is canola oil followed by corn, peanut and safflower. Vegetable comes in after that but is most common for baking. You could drizzle melted frosting or serve with vanilla ice cream on top of them as well.

What are the best apples to fry in air fryer?

There are many varieties you can choose from for sure. I always recommend Granny Smith or Fuji since those are firmer and won’t break down as easily. Next on the list would be pink lady or honey crisp but green is for us always. You want them tender but not to become mush and just disintegrate.

If you have visited this amusement park you have likely eaten their “fries”. These taste identical, just a different shape. You can easily slice into strips instead of circles if you’d rather.

    Baked Apples in Air Fryer

Our second choice is just as delicious but with fewer calories!! This one takes about 15 minutes to prep and get tender, ready to eat (devour) without much guilt at all. For our air fryer baked apples version the steps are below in the recipe card too. No flour necessary for these but you still want some cinnamon, brown sugar and butter will coat the outside in this case. Jump to recipe and try them both friends!!

    Ninja Foodi Option

Ok so these are just like the ones at Legoland if you have tried those. Crispy coated with cinnamon and sugar but with a tender middle that’s a ring of fruit. If you use your Foodi you will want to use the lid that is attached for this creation.

Can I deep fry in air fryer?

Sort of. You cannot fill the machine with oil but you don’t need to. You will get the same great texture and crunch without it this way! Best tips to do so are put foods in a single layer alway and use oil spray the last few minutes to reach a deeper golden brown.

What other fruit can you cook in air fryer?

Oh yes, there are so many things. Let me share a few others that were successful in the past. You can make apple chips in air fryer as well as “grilled” air fryer peaches. You could use the first with sliced bananas too if you wanted, or really anything you love sliced thin.

Want to create a baked good of sorts too? Try our semi-homemade air fryer apple dumplings. I just used refrigerated crescent rolls for the dough on those and canned pie apple fill. Voila they were the hit after dinner that night for sure.

Air fryer apple rings, perfectly crisp and golden, nestle in the basket while two fresh green apples stand in the background.
