How to cook pizza on the BBQ. It’s an easy way to cook outside on the barbecue and not heat up your house during the Summertime.
This is how to cook pizza on the BBQ which we now use quite regularly. When it is Summertime the last thing you want to do is turn on the oven! Special thanks goes out to KOVOT for sponsoring this post so we could share how we do this with you. (originally published 8/15)
- We do love anything with pepperoni, all 5 of us. It is a quick meal, pair it with a salad and we area all happy. During this Summer we really wanted pull apart pizza bread but since it was 106 outside we were NOT going to turn our oven on….. 🙂
We use our BBQ a lot!! Yes during the Summer it is a given that people barbecue with friends and family for lunch with burgers and hot dogs, but we have gone well beyond that since we live in such a warm area.
Last Summer we created desserts you can make on the BBQ and continue to make them quite often (so fabulous), this Summer we were bound and determined to make a great pizza too.
The first thing that is important is how you do the coals. First you want to make a pile of briquettes and light them.
Let the flame rise for a few minutes until it dies down just a bit. You don’t want it to be too terribly hot or else it will burn on the bottom of the pizza but leave the inside raw/frozen.
While you’re waiting for the briquettes to die down a bit get your pizza ready. We use frozen pizza but you could make your own and it just wouldn’t take as long to cook.
- Use an old cookie sheet….it will get a bit black so don’t use a great one. Make sure you have a great pair of BBQ gloves like this pair from KOVOT…..or your hands will get Toasty!!
Now that the briquettes have cooled a bit, flatten them out and arrange them in a circle around the edge of the BBQ. That way the pizza won’t get burnt.
Again, make sure to use heat protective BBQ gloves like the KOVOT pair here so you don’t burn yourself.
Put the pizza that is on your old cookie sheet on top of the grate of your BBQ with the coals underneath. Close for maybe 5 minutes and then continuously check it every 2 minutes or so after that.
All barbecues cook at different temperatures (and waiting an extra minute can mean a great to a burnt pizza). It’s a great way to keep your house cooler while still cooking your favorite dinner….pizza!!!

How to Cook a Pizza on the BBQ
- 1 frozen pizza
- Lite coals and allow to tame down so coals turn grey and flame dies down. Place an old cookie sheet on the grate with the frozen pizza on top.
- Close the lid and allow to cook for 5 minutes. Then lift lid and check every 2 minutes until it is browned to your liking and warm in the middle.
