What’s the trick to this Lipton onion soup mix meatloaf recipe? You’ll be surprised at what makes it extra moist, but first you need to grab a packet of dry onion soup mix. That gives our super easy ground beef recipe a ton of flavor, so much that kids will clean their plates too. (affiliate links present)

Lipton Meatloaf Recipe

I grew up with this box. My mom used to make a version of this quick meatloaf recipe on almost a weekly basis. In the 80s I guess that meal was just normal and every body had their own version. She rarely made a lot of things from scratch but this was as semi-homemade as she did.

Fast forward to when I had my own family I just incorporated it into our meal planning too. Guess I was just so used to this dish that it was in my nature to make it a lot too. Of course now I cook it in all sorts of ways. Our Ninja Foodi meatloaf is incredible because it’s easy, fast and the air fryer gets the outside nice and crispy.

Meatloaf with Onion Soup Mix

As far as your favorite cooking method you can use what you like. Baked in the oven using a loaf pan is typical, or you can just form it on a baking sheet like you see here. Want it done faster?? Try muffin tin meatloaf done in under 20 minutes flat and super crunchy on the outsides. Kids love it this way, so cute they say.

When it comes to making this old fashioned meal I never saw my mom use a spoon, so I don’t either. It is just so much easier to ensure that everything is incorporated well if you use your hands. Yes, wash them before AND make sure you take your rings off first. Made that mistake before and boy was that a mess.

You can saute and add MORE onions into the mix, just throw them right in, or keep just the dehydrated onions in the packet only. What is the “weird” ingredient added to make it extra moist?

Meatloaf ingredients

Lipton Onion Soup Meatloaf

It’s sour cream y’all!! I know, may be different than anything else you may have tried but I bet you can imagine how that would add taste and make it really tender inside. This uses 2 pounds of meat. You could certainly cut this whole thing in half if you wanted to feed fewer people.

Many times I will think ahead though to the whole week. If I make this on Monday, I will know there will be some left. SO I’ll use one of my leftover meatloaf recipes like our Ninja Foodi spaghetti, meatloaf sandwiches or in ground beef egg rolls crumbled up. This is what you need to make this family favorite dish.

  1. Large mixing bowl
  2. Ground meat, ground turkey works too
  3. Worcestershire sauce
  4. Onion soup packet
  5. Sour cream
  6. Bread crumbs – or use oats like we do with our meatloaf without breadcrumbs
  7. Baking dish, roasting pan with non stick foil or large meatloaf pan
  8. Eggs

Salt and pepper are the given seasonings and you don’t need much more since your onion packet has quite a bit in it. Then you can just use a sheet pan with foil and shape into a loaf OR make into balls and try our Instant Pot Swedish meatballs with this mixture.

If you want to cook this in your slow cooker make the mixture and put it on to a piece of foil. Spray lightly with non stick spray. Make a sling out of foil and place underneath so you can lift it in and out of the pot. Make into a loaf and lower down. Cover and cook 2.5-3.5 hours or until it reaches 165 degrees in thickest part.

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees if using this method. Prepare a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil. Spritz with nonstick cooking spray.
  • If you want to add even more onions than what is in the pack, heat a heavy skillet over medium high heat.
    • Melt the butter in the skillet and then add the onions.
    • Cook until they are soft and caramelized.
  • To make meatloaf: Mix all ingredients together until well blended using your hands.
    • Shape the meat mixture into a loaf and place on the prepared baking sheet.
    • Or make into smaller balls and follow cooking directions for meatloaf muffins
  • Bake for 55 minutes or until the meatloaf reaches an internal temperature of 165 F.

Remove, set aside and let it sit for 10 minutes before slicing to stay nice and moist on the inside.

What side dishes go with meatloaf?

Well mashed potatoes of course is what is classically served together. You can make slow cooker baked potatoes and serving them together too. Change things up a bit and dice this up into smaller pieces, stuff inside with your gravy on top and serve it that way!

Anything is a go with this souperior meatloaf if you ask me. Let your mind go wild.
