This 3 ingredient easy Instant Pot dump cake with fruit filling is delicious! Just dump it in with cake mix and top with ice cream when it’s done. The perfect little pressure cooker dessert you’re whole family will enjoy.
This easy Instant Pot dump cake can be made with any fruit pie filling you like. We chose apple and it came out amazing! Now this is one of our favorite dessert Instant Pot recipes we’ve made, you can make it in any brand of pressure cooker you might have at home. 😉 (originally published 7/17)
If you’ve never made a dump cake it means just that. You mix together a few ingredients, dump in your pie filling, cook and enjoy!
We recently used white cake mix with blueberry pie filling and those flavors are delicious too.
Let’s start with a few basic tips:
- Make sure to Bookmark our InstaPot recipes page. We add new ones each week!
- Then LIKE our IP Facebook page for new ideas daily.
- This is a great InstaPot cookbook and set of wooden utensils are great to grab too.
- I HIGHLY recommend you buy this non stick pot. It is easier to clean and will avoid the burn message too.
For reference, this is the pressure cooker I have and use for all recipe creations.
Instant Pot apple dump cake
- Oven safe cake pan or dish & trivet to cook this using the PIP method
- Pie filling – really the best is apple or cherry pie filling
- Box of cake mix – best one has been spice cake mix
- homemade yellow cake mix works too
- Egg
When cooking this easy Instant Pot dump cake dessert it does rise a bit so when you put the foil on top try to dome it so it doesn’t stick.
I will either spray the inside of the foil with nonstick spray or use non stick aluminum foil if I have it on hand. If you don’t have it it isn’t a deal breaker. It will just stick slightly to the top where the foil meets the dump cake.
We topped it off with scoops with vanilla ice cream which slowly melted and added even more flavor.
It’s pretty amazing….
The apple pie filling has quite a bit of moisture to it so unlike our traditional dump cake recipe I used an egg instead of butter.
Dump cake in Instant Pot
As with any easy dump cake it is NOT dry at all and continues to cook while it is cooling. So if it looks a bit wet when it comes out not to worry. It will be perfect when it’s cooled.
We have also used yellow cake mix + a can of apple pie filling as seen below. It comes out a looser consistency than the spice cake mix and takes a bit longer too.
We have tested this recipe in different pans and with a variety of mixes and the one in the recipe card is best!
If you love this but would rather use fresh apples you should try our crockpot apple crisp that tastes similar but uses all fresh ingredients.
When you’re done making this you should try our other Instant Pot dessert recipes

Instant Pot dump cake
I have made this right in the pot as you see in this video but some said they had some issues with it getting stuck so the one below is using the pot in pot method.
You could spray a bit of cooking spray inside your dish before adding the ingredients. This will help with clean up later. Whipped cream or ice cream works for the top of the cake if you wish, it’s plenty sweet as is though.
Time needed: 28 minutes.
Instant Pot cherry dump cake
- Mix
In a bowl, pour your cake mix in with 1 egg and mix together, then add pie filling and fold together so it is combined well.
- Prepare
Pour 1.5 cups of water into your Instant Pot and put a trivet at the bottom of your pot. Spray your oven safe bowl with non stick spray and dump your dump cake mixture into your dish.
Cover that with foil (can spray underside of foil with non stick spray to avoid sticking as well, I do) and make a sling out of foil to lower it on to your trivet inside your Instant Pot. - Cook
Put lid on, close steam valve, and set to: manual, pressure cook, high, set the timer for a 28 minutes cook time. Do a natural release.
- Rest
Take out, remove foil, and let stand for 5-10 minutes on a cooling rack so it can stiffen up and settle. Serve topped with ice cream!

Tips to remember are: allow the steam to naturally vs. a quick release. This will allow the cake to continue cooking and not fall.
It needs a bit of time to stiffen and settle in too so allow some time to rest once it’s done.
We never have leftovers but if you did you could put foil over the top and put into the fridge. Enjoy it within the next 2 days or so for optimal results and taste.
Not in order to serve it, most times they’re served warm.
Leftover boxed cake mix recipes should reach room temperature and then stored in an airtight container in your fridge though.

This blog is so disjointed and hard to follow. Not enough detail, way too much advertising.

Good morning! This recipe looks wonderful. Would a springform pan meant for a 6 quart IP work? I will use a gluten free yellow cake mix as I have never seen a GF spice cake mix. I was wondering what spices to add and how much of each. We like a lot of spice in our desserts! I will try apple first but cherry sounds yummy too! 🙂
Susan says
I used 1 cup of ALDI gluten free yellow cake mix and it came out wonderful…
Mark says
Recipe looks great and super easy! I can’t wait to try it. I’m fairly new to the IP world but get confused with posted cook times. This recipe shows 10 minutes prep, 25 minutes cook and total time of 32 minutes…
The recipe instructions indicate a high pressure cook time of 28 and a natural release. Based on some of my previous cooks it would be more like….10 minutes prep, 28minutes, minimum 10 minutes for NPR and not even considering heat up time to get to pressure. It looks like I would need to plan on at least an hour from start to finish on this one.
In general, what is the “Total Time” in recipes supposed to represent?
Are there some basic assumptions that I’m missing?
When planning a meal this becomes very important.
Keep up the great recipes!!!
Lynne says
I noticed this is 1 c cake and 1.5 c fruit filling. (NOT a whole cake mix nor a whole can of filling) Notes say this amt is too much for a 7 X 3″ which is what fits my 6 qt IP….what size pan in cups did you use. Nowhere does this recipe give me a clue what size or type dish/pan to use. Help please.
Justine says
Yes. There is a link above in what you need that says oven safe dish. It takes you to the 24 oz dish I use.
Sandi says
I have the 3qt mini should I halve the ingredients – using a 6″ pan that fits in the mini
The Typical Mom says
If pan is same size then timing is the same.
April says
I have yet to try making a dessert in my IP. I think I’m going to start with this one! Yum!
The Typical Mom says
It’s so easy and always a hit.
Britni says
Love finding new recipes that make my life easier.
The Typical Mom says
Couldn’t be any easier than this.
Barbara Buchler says
I’m going to try this but using ramekins instead for a lot of little dump cakes 🙂
The Typical Mom says
Let me know how they turn out.
Russ says
Can you use frozen fruit (like bluberries) rather than a can of fruit?
Jenny Sowerby says
Can I make this recipe without using an inner pot?
The Typical Mom says
It tends to get very done on the bottom if you don’t use an inner pot.
Nana44 says
Do the pots in your link fit a 6 quart Instant Pot? Or are they for the 8 quart?
S Christensen says
Here are the measurements. I’m told the 6 quart will take anything 7 inches.
Cake Barrel Size:7×7×3 inch
Pizza Pan Size:7×7×1 inch
Metal Holder Size: 7×7×2.7 inch
Skewer Size: 7×2 inch
Silicone Mat size: 7×7×0.3 inch
Brenda Copeland says
How about just using a 9″ by 13″ pan?
The Typical Mom says
Link is above and here: https://temeculablogs.com/dump-cake-recipe/
Libby Cook says
Can I use my 7in spring form pan for this recipe. Is the right amount of ingredients for that sized pan?
The Typical Mom says
The one I have wouldn’t hold it when it rises, if using a similar model I would half this recipe or it will bubble over.
Sonka says
What is the correct cooking time? The top of the recipe says prep time 10 minutes cooking 12 minutes for a total of 22 minutes….but the instructions says cook on manual for 22minutes.. I want to try this but I want to make sure I have the right time
The Typical Mom says
Sorry, I fixed the error. Set it for 22-25 minutes depending on how firm you’d like it. We like 22 minutes on high.
Sheils says
I don’t understand #4. It sounds like you put everything in a separate dush to stir initially. Then you said to put it in the IP and add foil on top then water then the trivet! I’m confused!
The Typical Mom says
Mix contents in a mixing bowl, pour into your pot that will fit inside your IP and cover with foil. Put your trivet in and pour water in the bottom of your IP. Lower the foil covered pot (that is now filled with cake mixture) on to your trivet.
Amanda says
Hello! I don’t have an instant pot but am planning to get one. Does the trivet your reference come with the pot? I can’t find a listing for it for sale. Also, what kind of pot do you put the mixture in to put in the instant pot?
The Typical Mom says
There is a link in my post for the pot I use. A trivet does come with your IP so that one should be just fine.
C.A. says
If I dont’ have an instapot, what is the high pressure equivalent?
Queenie says
How long did you cook in the slow cooker method?
Barb says
Is there something I could substitute for the butter? I live with a butter hater (don’t understand it at all) so I have to figure out options.
Thanks!
The Typical Mom says
Maybe a butter substitute, not sure.
Mike k says
Try coconut oil
Jack says
Coconut oil and canola oil have similar high temperature/smoke levels so it could also be used as a replacement for butter, IMO.
Jennifer says
I don’t understand the complaints. I used a box of cinnamon swirl muffin mix from Aldi and it was scrumptious and moist after cooking 15 minutes. I love easy recipes thanks alot!
The Typical Mom says
Yeah…glad to know muffin mix works well too!
Larraine says
Excellent idea
Kathy says
My ip keeps turning to burn and then shuts off. What am I doing wrong?
Michael says
Same problem. Any ideas?
Trina says
I don’t think there is enough liquid.
Christie says
You arent supposed to put it directly in the pot. You put it in another oven safe dish. Pour water directly into pot. Set your trivet in. Then put your oven safe dish filled with cake on top of trivet. You won’t get burn code. I used round pie pans.
Jack says
The IP Duo manual list this situation under Troubleshooting, item 12. Remove the inner pot and inspect the bottom of it for starch deposits that may have clogged the heat dissipation. I had this happen once when cooking rice.
Inge Bohnenkanp says
I made the apple crisp dump cake:but used the slow cook option on my instapot. Came out great and was delicious. I refrigerated it and the next morning it was as hard as a rock.
Any insight?
The Typical Mom says
That one may not save well as there isn’t a lot of moisture and it is best served immediately. Try this one and it saves for a good 2 days after. https://temeculablogs.com/pressure-cooker-brownies/

Megan Painter says
I used yellow cake and cherry pie filling. After 12 minutes it was still very raw looking even after I let it stand for 6 or 7 minutes. I put the lid back on and cooked an additional 5 minutes. When I went to release the steam slowly. there was no steam. Not sure if I did something wrong. I did a water test afterwards and everything was fine.
The Typical Mom says
There isn’t a lot of steam for this one as there isn’t much true liquid and that is okay. A dump cake typically is a very loose consistency by nature so you did it right! Adding a few more min. is fine to get the texture you want.
jenni says
Can you do this pip like your peach cobbler your son made? Also, if you can would you melt the butter like this recipe calls to do or would you prepare it like the peach way cutting the butter into the cake mix?
The Typical Mom says
I have always melted my butter first when making dump cakes. You could do pip for sure.
Michele says
What about using pumpkin instead of pie filling?
The Typical Mom says
Would probably work with pumpkin, I will probably try that! Let me know if you do!
Jiy Walters says
Do you NPR or quick release?
The Typical Mom says
I move steam valve just slightly to let steam out very slowly.
Pauline Vrbanic says
Did you grease the interior of the pot? Is there a problem with sticking?
The Typical Mom says
No I didn’t and had no problems with sticking.
Barbara Schieving says
Looks like one I need to try!
The Typical Mom says
EASY dessert in the IP!
Di Trying says
Looks delicious. Do you use some kind of pot inside the jnstapot?
The Typical Mom says
No for this one I just put it right in!
Jack says
Earlier you described putting an oven proof bowl, covered with foil, into the inner pot. “Just put it right in” may have confused Di Trying. It is a pot within the inner pot (whatever type) is what I assume is done.
The Typical Mom says
Yes it is a pot inside the inner Instant Pot pot. You can see the picture of the pot with the metal handle, that goes inside.
