Has Crockpot steak and potatoes just been a dream but you never thought it was really possible. Like, actually coming out tender and flavorful? It is! If you’re ready to try a new slow cooker recipe this week, this should be the one y’all. (affiliate links present)
Crockpot Steak
Yes we do love our Instant Pot but quite frankly the slow cooker function does NOT work well on it. Just use your good ol’ fashioned machine for all of your favorite Crockpot recipes. This is one of my husband’s favorite meals because he is a meat and potatoes kinda’ guy. 😉
You can use your beef of choice; T bone, NY strip, Porterhouse, and potatoes as well. I usually use russets but you could easily opt for red potatoes as well, or a mixture of the two. You’ll not only cook your meat to tender but a side dish at the same time too. Game changer.

Slow Cooker Sirloin Steak and Potatoes
If you’ve never thought about making steak in a Crockpot well you totally can. When you want meat n potatoes for dinner, this may turn out to be a game changer for y’all.
Just pop it all in, sprinkle in your favorite steak dry rub on top and when the time is up you’ll not only have protein but taters ready too. Use our steak doneness temperatures chart so you get it just right at the end.
Whisk in some thickener to make a batch of gravy to serve with it too. I mean that is just comfort food on a plate if you ask me!
How Long to Cook Steak in Slow Cooker
I do recommend high for this which I normally don’t say is best. Reason for this is you don’t want to cook beef like this too long or it will get dry. Therefore the cook time will vary quite a bit depending on the size, preferred doneness and thickness. In general though, 4 hours on high is usually just about right!
First you’re going to choose your cut of choice. There are tons of possibilities and everyone has their preference regarding which style is best. We are talking about “regular” steaks, for something with more of a grain to it that needs to be cooked much longer like our slow cooker flank steak, use these directions instead.
Most would say though that these are the best cuts of beef for slow cooking; chuck steak, round steak, blade steak, topside, silverside, skirt steak, or (gravy) beef for results you’ll love. We used eye of round for this batch.
It’s not recommended to cook frozen meat in a slow cooker. There’s the risk of harmful bacteria contaminating the meat before it reaches a safe temperature using this method. The best place to thaw your meat is in the refrigerator before cooking it in a Crockpot.
Some prefer to sear the outside of their meat before adding. That is fine as well if you want a bit of stiffened texture on the outsides.
How do you cook meat and vegetables in a slow cooker?
Firm vegetables like potatoes and carrots work well. Place them on top of the meat inside your crock and sprinkle on the seasonings. Keep them LARGE or they’ll fall apart. It is best to cook on the low setting (170 degrees F for most models) the cook time will be twice as long as cooking on high but will yield a better result.
- Yes you could cook just your meat inside your pot but when it’s time to sit down and eat you’re going to look for some carbs, so just go ahead and cook everything together!
- It just makes a lot more sense to do it that way. One pot meals are the way to go you know.
- PLUS, potatoes soak up all the flavorful juices from the meat and seasonings which makes them one of the best parts of the meal.
We follow this same method to cook a whole chicken in a Crockpot. They’re fought over at dinnertime I tell you.
You can use any type of cut you like. If all you have is frozen steak that works too and the timing doesn’t even really matter which is crazy.
Crock pot Steak Ingredients

- cut of meat we chose was eye of round
- Potatoes cut into LARGE pieces or halved

See??!! If this is your type of meal you should try Crockpot steak and potatoes this week. It’s a great recipe your whole family will love with less than a 15 minute prep time at the start.
Can you overcook in a slow cooker?
Slow cookers gradually bring your food up to a simmer point. You can’t overcook it up to that point, but it can happen if you cook it too long after it reaches this stage. It will begin to dry out regardless of how much liquid you’ve included in your pot. I haven’t ever had this issue with really any Crockpot recipe I’ve made, but I tend to always cook on low and never more than 8 hours. As long as you follow directions accordingly, and add enough liquid you should be just fine.
I have a printable recipe at the bottom of this post but here is a quick step by step so you can get a peek of it real quick before you get started. Spray inside of crock with non stick spray and lay steaks on the bottom. Wash and cut potatoes in half or 4ths with skins in tact.
How to Cook Steak and Potatoes in Crockpot
- Put chunks of russets around steak. The smaller the taters the more tender they will be. You don’t want them smaller than in 4ths or they will just disintegrate.
- Add broth or water until half of steak is sitting in the liquid (will vary depending on how large your pot is) Sprinkle everything with dry soup mix.
- Cover and cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 6 hours until steak and potatoes are tender to your liking.

Made this last night. My steaks were thin… I should have stopped cooking at 6 hours, but it was still good. My teen loved it!
I’m a stirrer. Can you stir this periodically or should you just leave alone for the entire time?
I’m the same, but my late father-in-law taught me crockpots are to be left alone until done. I still check at about ½ way mark.
Excited to try this, I just prepped everything but added carrots. I used 2 cups of beef broth like the article said to. But because my crock pot is smaller, the steaks are on the bottom and fully covered in broth, while the veggies are on top. Is this going to still work our well and cook properly? Not sure if the steaks should be floating in broth basically lol. Thanks for the recipe!
I have 6 small and thin cut eye of round, will that be too many since their thin and small?
Thinner they are the shorter I would cook it
@The Typical Mom,
Will this work if I use a frozen steak? How long would I cook it if it’s 1/2″ thick. Thanks!
I imagine it would be fine, I wouldn’t adjust timing
Can’t wait to try this recipe! How thick were the steaks you used?
Can this be prepped the night before store in the refrigerator and then cooked the next day?
Can filet mignon be used in this recipe??
Asking for someone else. Thx
I never knew you could do steak in the crock pot! I cant wait to try this!
That sauce looks to-die-for and the meat, so tender. This is going to be happening this weekend at my house for sure!
This sounds delicious. Eye of round is my favorite cut of beef to use in the slow cooker. I have a question about what goes in the cooker first, the potatoes, or the beef… First part of directions say potatoes then beef. Recipe says beef first, then potatoes. Thanks for your help.
Sorry about that, fixed my error. Follow recipe card instructions. Meat on bottom. 😉
My chef friend says always put potatoes and veggies on bottom and meat on top.
So I tried it and followed to the T planning on cooking on low for 7 hrs. You said to put the meat on the bottom, it’s hour five and the steaks have completely overcooked ? What gives ? Why did the meat turn to cardboard for me ?
Are you sure you had it on low for that long? If it was on high yes that is too long. Timing varies according to how thick each piece is too but please check temp.
Do you put the steak in frozen or thawed?
