Pressure cooker fried cabbage will be your new favorite meal if you love steamed cabbage with bacon! Made in just 3 minutes it’s our favorite side dish. Don’t you love your Instant Pot and Ninja Foodi?
I wasn’t a cabbage fan when I was younger either but when I became an adult I just love it!! This pressure cooker fried cabbage made me a lover. Recently I’ve made several easy Instant Pot recipes with it too! (participant in the Amazon program, affiliate links present)
Instant Pot Fried Cabbage
If you’re ready for some flavorful cooked cabbage and sausage or bacon you’ll love this. The perfect side dish during the week we say. I started with Instant Pot stuffed cabbage casserole which is always a hit but more of a dinner recipe.
And this isn’t just for a side dish during St. Patrick’s Day either, though we make it then as well. I started with the ingredients my Grandmother used back in the day, in a pot on the stove. She made this weekly, sometimes more than once, no matter what main dish was on the table…that is just the way it was.

Let’s start with a few basic tips:
- Make sure to Bookmark our InstaPot recipes page. We add new ones each week!
- Then LIKE our IP Facebook page for new ideas daily.
- I HIGHLY recommend you buy this non stick pot. It is easier to clean and will avoid the burn message too.
How long does it take to boil cabbage?
Well in this case you aren’t really submerging it in water and boiling it. Yes you add liquid so it comes to pressure but because it is cubed it only takes a few minutes. If you were to cook the whole thing I would say it would be closer to maybe 8 minutes but the outside would be mush by the time the center got soft. I wouldn’t recommend that. For reference, I have a 6 qt. pressure cooker and use for all recipe creations. Then I made Instant Pot stuffed cabbage and couldn’t stop with all the simple cabbage recipes!!
Ninja Foodi Fried Cabbage
Of course you can make it in your Ninja Foodi or Crock Pot Express too. Any brand works. For the Foodi though you will need to remember that the lid that is not attached is the one you want to pressure cook under high pressure.
We have cooked cabbage wedges with the other lid that is attached as well but that is a whole different dish, with less flavor and needs to be sliced when served. Still great though with a bit of crisp to them just like our other air fryer cabbage dishes, I’m telling you, this has been a game changer. Can you tell I’ve been on a cabbage kick lately? 😉
Any way you choose to do it you just pressure cook for a few minutes with some chicken broth and salt and pepper to taste on high pressure and BAM! Ok…there are a few other secret ingredients, but seriously it will make you love cabbage too. Ok, so it’s not really fried in this case but amazing is how to describe it…….
Is cabbage better for you raw or cooked?
Cooked carrots, spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, cabbage, peppers and many other vegetables supply more antioxidants to the body than they do when raw. There is a BEST way to cook it though, you need to boil or steam it to maintain the vitamins.
I will start by saying if you have a family recipe for fried cabbage then by all means use those measurements and seasonings and just follow my instructions as far as how much liquid to add and how long to cook it. If you don’t then this is the way I have made it several times and we all love it……
What goes good with fried cabbage?
We think bacon is a must! You could dice up precooked sausage links and add them into the mix too. That isn’t the traditional add in but make it your own creation y’all!
Ingredients
- Head of cabbage
- chop cabbage into 1″x 1″ squares basically
- Bacon is great, I like uncured regular (not thick) slices personally
- Vegetable broth – really you could use any style broth or stock you wanted
- Soy sauce
- Olive oil
- Spices
- Garlic salt
- Lawry’s seasoned salt
- Paprika
- Pinch of salt and pepper at the end are optional
- Onion
How do you cut cabbage for fried cabbage?
This is not rocket science but here it goes: Just cut the hard stem off the bottom, then slice the head in half. Put the flat end on your cutting board and slice 4x vertically, then 5x (or so) horizontally so you get squares
- Voila’, makes sense right? You just want equally sized cabbage squares so every piece is as tender as the next
- Tip: If you like it a bit firmer cut larger squares, softer = smaller squares.
If you want to make this great recipe vegetarian style, then just leave out the bacon of course. 😉 Video below will show you how to make this quick cooking time, and how we make this easy fried cabbage recipe

Tips
Tips for making the best cabbage in a pressure cooker:
- Choose a small head of cabbage
- Discard end
- Slice it into about 5 thick slices
- Then cut those slices into 1″ x 1″ pieces
- Do not drain the bacon after you saute it
- Grease adds to the overall taste
- Make sure to deglaze your pot after sauteeing
- I HIGHLY suggest you get a non stick pot if you don’t already have one, little need to deglaze if you have one
- Quick release the steam
- Take lid off immediately and turn pot off when done, or cabbage will get too soft

The last time I cooked cabbage in the Instapot it was mushy. I took your advice and cooked the cabbage for 2-minutes with quick release. It was the perfect texture and delicious. Since I don’t eat pork, in the instapot I sautéed some turkey bacon and onions prior to pressure cooking the cabbage. Thanks for the recipe.
This recipe was AMAZING! I absolutely loved the smoky flavors from the bacon and spices. I am having the leftovers today for lunch, and I could be totally satisfied with just this but I am adding a plant burger for some extra protein. Thanks so much!
Yay it is our favorite too with corned beef or just as a snack
I’ve tried cabbage recipes and have always failed. This was spot on. I did a 2 minute cook time. Wow. 1 and 5 year old loved it and ate double portions. Husband said it was the best cabbage I’ve made. I agree. Thank you!
Oh yay, glad it was a hit!!
