Have you ever made dessert in your crockpot?? Well I am all about using my slow cooker on a weekly basis, even in the Summertime, so the thought of making dessert in one too is right up my alley. Check out this chocolate crockpot cake recipe that’s to die for and easy to make! Here’s how you make one of our favorite dessert crockpot recipes. (affiliate links present)

Slow Cooker Cake in Ramekins

I started this whole thing by filling the whole pot with batter and made this Crockpot lava cake with cake mix (linked above). That was really over the top but hard to eat and a bit of a mess when serving. I thought making something similar in ramekins would be more fun, and it was.

The other great part about these chocolate fudge cakes is they bake in their own dishes so there isn’t much mess when it’s all said and done. I mean our Crockpot Peach Cobbler with Cake Mix  is amazing too but you have quite a bit of soaking at the end to get the insides clean.

Let’s talk a little bit about slow cooking shall we?? First off I have a few different varieties and I love them all. Each one has an occasion to be used like….

  1. This is my favorite 6 quart programmable one with a locking lid so it’s great for bringing to a potluck too.
  2. I prefer not to use liners, but rather just spray olive oil inside before adding my food for easier cleanups.

Let me give you a peek of my pretty thang I bought recently. It goes with my kitchen so I can just leave it out on the countertop all the time. 😉

A floral design slow cooker with a white base and lid sits on a kitchen countertop, perfect for whipping up a 5 ingredient crockpot chili recipe.

Crockpot Chocolate Cake

It is super moist with almost a fudge like quality to it but rises slightly like a cake….delicious. Yes you could make this as a cake mix recipe but I think that this easy homemade version turns out better. It is a bit more ooey gooey and kinda’ like a flourless cake texture.

I have several sizes of crockpots. Each one is a slightly different shape and size and I like them all. If I am cooking a dish to bring to a potluck during the holidays I like my 8 qt or if I am just making a hot dip I like my casserole size.

Sometimes if I am having a rather larger crowd I will make this as well as another batch of Crockpot brookies which is just as easy using refrigerated ready made cookie batter and brownie boxed.

Ingredients

  • Large bowl
  • 4 ramekin dishes and of course a crockpot
    • I like a 6 or 8 quart crockpot for this recipe though I have probably 5 of different sizes and shapes.
  • 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips, set aside 4 ounces
  • 4 tbsp. of salted butter
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • Confectioners’ sugar

Crockpot Cake with Cake Mix

For this recipe we made an easy homemade chocolate cake vs. making as a boxed cake mix recipe. If you wanted to use the latter it would take the same amount of time with the same instructions other than making the batter. Essentially the steam cooks it low and slow which “bakes” them, but a bit denser.

Vanilla ice cream for the top is a great add on, whipped topping, or a few sprinkled nuts would work.

How to Bake a Cake in a Crockpot

If you’re looking for a quicker method you can use these instructions for more of a dump cake. It is good but takes longer to cook. Making it inside the actual crock will require you to spray your slow cooker with cooking spray. If not, you’ll have a few days of scrubbing to do.

  • You can make them in individual serving dishes quickly
  • Or you can make crockpot chocolate cake with fruit filling like you see here
  • There are pros and cons to both but either way get ready for some deliciousness
    • homemade may run you 30 minutes for prep and all
    • crockpot dump cakes can be thrown together in closer to 5
