How Long to Cook Rice on Stove

You’re going to need a medium saucepan for this that has a lid that will secure tightly. We are focusing on cooking long grain white rice in these instructions. You could do the same thing with other grains that still have the husk in tact. The water ratio may be different for those.

  1. Rinse with a fine mesh strainer with cold water first and then drain so you can rinse the rice.
  2. Add this to a pot with a tight fitting lid.
  3. Add water in a ratio of 2 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice.
    • if you are going to double this make sure that the contents are not higher than halfway full, remember it will fluff up and expand.
  4. Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with your lid.
  6. Simmer for 18 minutes to 20 minutes or until tender to your liking.

After that, turn off the heat and let the rice sit covered, for 5 – 15 minutes to allow it to steam and absorb any remaining moisture.

How do you fix underdone rice?

Once it is cooked to your liking, fluff it with a fork and serve. It’s important to note that you should always check for doneness before serving it. If it’s not fully cooked, you can add a little bit of water and continue on the stovetop for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until it’s perfect for your family. White long grain and medium grain you’ll need about 1 cup uncooked rice + 2 cups water or other liquid of choice. For short grain like sushi style, use 1 cup grains + 1.5 cup water. For most brown or tougher varieties, combine 1 cup rice and up to 2 1/4 cups water (start with 2 and add more later if you think you need it)

The microwave recipe for rice can vary depending on the type of grain you’re using, the quantity, and the wattage too. As a general guideline, you can follow these steps of how to cook rice in the microwave:

  1. Since white rice takes the least amount of time I suggest you go with that one.
  2. Use a colander and thoroughly rinse, then put it in a microwave-safe bowl.
  3. Add water in a ratio of 1.5 cups of water for every cup of rice.
  4. Cover the bowl with a lid that is safe to use in this device (a plate works too), or microwave safe plastic wrap.
  5. Heat on high (regular temperature) for 10-12 minutes.
  6. Let it sit in the bowl untouched when done for an additional 5 minutes after cooking to allow it to steam and absorb any remaining moisture.
