Slime with Baking Soda
My kids, especially my youngest here, is obsessed with making slime! There are tons of recipes out there and we’ve made a few together but when she wants to make one “all by myself” I need one that is kid safe. Clear slime is fun because you can find little items to mix in and you can see them well!
You could really add anything inside though….that’s what makes this easy slime recipe so fun!
Baking Soda Slime
I don’t know, but I think the fascination with slime is in making it themselves. She’s bought a few batches at the store with money she’s earned but doesn’t like it nearly as much as the ones she’s made herself.
Watching it transform from sticky glue, to a thicker mixture, to something she can pick up and knead is a big part of the fun and this kid safe recipe makes it easy for me to say “yes, go ahead and make some”.
Of course with children and any experiments you should always be present just in case, please see my safety disclaimer before starting. Let us know what you think! 😉
How to make slime with baking soda
Slime ingredients are pretty simple
- 1/2 c. Elmers glue clear glue (or glitter glue is fun, either bottle of glue will work)
- 1/2 c. warm water
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- Contact lens solution – 4 tbsp. or so, amt. depends on the consistency you want
- called saline solution or contact lense cleaner too
- Beads, floam and sequins – this variety pack is perfect for making tons of different clear slime recipes
- Food coloring can be used but the point is to be clear
Our kids loved to play with this slime. Below is a video to watch how where my daughter shows you how she made this with baking soda and contact solution. If you’re missing the main ingredients, this is how to make slime without glue too.
How to Make Baking Soda Slime
Here are quick step by step directions for you!
- Empty your clear glue into a bowl. Heat up water in the microwave, so it is warm. Add baking soda to your warm water, stir.
- Mix your baking soda solution in with your glue. Stir well until combined. Add 1 tbsp. of contact solution (or just squeeze a little) at a time and stir until it reaches the desired consistency.
Add more contact lens solution if you want a stiffer texture. (a little goes a long way) Add beads or glitter if desired, knead into clear slime. Enjoy this activity for kids with no liquid starch needed. Rub a bit of baby oil into a plastic airtight container to store and keep moist.
Can you make slime with just baking soda and glue?
You need a bit of contact lens solution too to stiffen it up too so not quite, but close. If you just added these two the consistency wouldn’t be right. You need something to make it stiffen up so it can be kneaded and not stick to your hands.
What is the easiest recipe showing how to make slime?
Watch our video below to see how to combine glute, water, baking soda and contact lens solution. Once the texture is right you can then add foam beads or buttons into the mix to make it more fun with “treasures” inside kids can find. Our mixture is safe for kids to make too!
If you choose to add beads or floam bits it can have a crunchy new texture which is always fun. A new add in means a new batch and more experimentation for your kids. Making it is the best part.

When making this easy recipe you have to accept the fact that there will be messes made…and that is okay!
Each week it needs to be done just to keep the house clean, but when extra messes arise the mop is easy accessible for them to use. Find FUN ways for wringing in spring cleaning for them!
that is so cool omg
can you use specsavers glasses cleaner
instead of contact cleaner
Not sure, haven’t used that.
Hi, I tried with the ingredients you mentioned and though it was successful, when left overnight, the slime hardened in the container with a pool of liquid. I tried to salvage it but couldn’t. Can advise?
I wear rigid gas permeable contact lenses and used my disenfecting conditioner solution and the slime didn’t work. Now that I’m reading your receipe I see you used the cleaner for soft contacts that has the borox, my Bausch and Lomb does not list borox as an ingredient.? I have made many batches of slime working at a preschool and our receipe is equal parts Elmer’s glue (not school glue) and liquid starch. The chemical reaction takes awhile and the batch looks stringy until the reaction is complete and it turns to slime.
Everyone that is complaining about contact solution having borax in it so it’s not safe…you literally put this stuff in your EYES if you wear contacts so yes it is safe!
I just tried this recipe and it works. I’m using clear glue & contact lense saline instead the cleaning solution. It works and my girl loves it. This recipe is easy for a 3yo to make it …
I tried it , at first it was fine, as they played with it… it got very wet & every had a large amount of contact solution (im assuming) in the bottom of the bowl. After the “wetness” dries, it leaves a white powder like residue…. is that safe for my kids ?? Makes your hands almost look ashy.
I would say don’t put water, just glue baking soda and contact lense solution is perfect and don’t dry up, watery or messy. It’s on Elmer’s official slime

Hi, saw that it didn’t work for some’ so I only wanted to say that it actually can be the “wrong” glue. Because here in Sweden our “school glue” didn’t work, don’t know why but tried what I had at hand, and that was “wood glue”, and it worked. maybe not so good to use that, but yeah…??
And for those who says it isn’t borax free, ok, maybe not, but do u know how much? And how dangerous can it be if u have it in your eyes?
Great blog btw, thx
Contact solution has Borax in it. Small amount but it does.
do you need contact lens cleaning stuff?
Yep
