Slime with Baking Soda

My kids, especially my youngest here, is obsessed with making slime! There are tons of recipes out there and we’ve made a few together but when she wants to make one “all by myself” I need one that is kid safe. Clear slime is fun because you can find little items to mix in and you can see them well!

You could really add anything inside though….that’s what makes this easy slime recipe so fun!

Baking Soda Slime

I don’t know, but I think the fascination with slime is in making it themselves. She’s bought a few batches at the store with money she’s earned but doesn’t like it nearly as much as the ones she’s made herself.

Watching it transform from sticky glue, to a thicker mixture, to something she can pick up and knead is a big part of the fun and this kid safe recipe makes it easy for me to say “yes, go ahead and make some”.

Of course with children and any experiments you should always be present just in case, please see my safety disclaimer before starting.  Let us know what you think! 😉

How to make slime with baking soda

Slime ingredients are pretty simple

  1. 1/2 c. Elmers glue clear glue (or glitter glue is fun, either bottle of glue will work)
  2. 1/2 c. warm water
  3. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  4. Contact lens solution – 4 tbsp. or so, amt. depends on the consistency you want
    1. called saline solution or contact lense cleaner too
  5. Beads, floam and sequins – this variety pack is perfect for making tons of different clear slime recipes
  6. Food coloring can be used but the point is to be clear

Our kids loved to play with this slime. Below is a video to watch how where my daughter shows you how she made this with baking soda and contact solution. If you’re missing the main ingredients, this is how to make slime without glue too.

How to Make Baking Soda Slime

Here are quick step by step directions for you!

  • Empty your clear glue into a bowl. Heat up water in the microwave, so it is warm. Add baking soda to your warm water, stir.
  • Mix your baking soda solution in with your glue. Stir well until combined. Add 1 tbsp. of contact solution (or just squeeze a little) at a time and stir until it reaches the desired consistency.

Add more contact lens solution if you want a stiffer texture. (a little goes a long way) Add beads or glitter if desired, knead into clear slime. Enjoy this activity for kids with no liquid starch needed. Rub a bit of baby oil into a plastic airtight container to store and keep moist.

Can you make slime with just baking soda and glue?

You need a bit of contact lens solution too to stiffen it up too so not quite, but close. If you just added these two the consistency wouldn’t be right. You need something to make it stiffen up so it can be kneaded and not stick to your hands.

What is the easiest recipe showing how to make slime?

Watch our video below to see how to combine glute, water, baking soda and contact lens solution. Once the texture is right you can then add foam beads or buttons into the mix to make it more fun with “treasures” inside kids can find. Our mixture is safe for kids to make too!

If you choose to add beads or floam bits it can have a crunchy new texture which is always fun. A new add in means a new batch and more experimentation for your kids. Making it is the best part.

  1. We tried it as well and it didn’t work….we even ended up adding about half a bottle of contact solution (a little at a time of course) and nothing but soup. any other recommendations?

    1. Make sure baking soda is not expired and link to contact cleaning solution we used is in post. I have made it with her to verify the recipe with both clear and white glue and works well. Hope that helps.

      1. I made 2 unsuccessful batches before I realized we were using contact RINSE and not the cleaning solution. Lol

  2. For those of you asking what is contact solution, it is just saline solution. Hope that helps.

    1. Actually there are properties in the contact cleaning solution beyond saline that make it bind into slime, pure saline will not work. Link to what we used in the post.

      1. I have been read I g concerns about borax. After working for 18 years with contact lenses at an opticians… I can assure you that you DO NOT put lens cleaning solution in your eyes. This is neutralized before lenses are put in to eyes. Those saying anything that goes in your eyes must be safe for children.. it’s not.
Ask anyone who has forgotten the second stage of cleaning and put lenses in … OUCH.

      1. Make sure the contact solution people are using has boric acid (borax)
        If not, it won’t work.

  3. Hmm. We tried this and followed the directions to the tee and it is just liquid. :

    1. you add more contact solution to bind it together and keep working it in. we got ours to work !

      1. A liquid used to clean your contact lenses. For this recipe it binds it together to create a slime consistency.

    2. Make sure water is good and warm and add enough contact solution so it binds together well.

  4. Can wait to try this with my toddlers we have tried a few without borax but nothing compares to the borax type. Unfortunately it’s too dangerous to use with my toddlers so hope this recipe is our new go to.

    1. I know this is a late reply but there is borax in contact solution.
Sodium borate is what it is called when listed in the ingredients.

      1. Thank you! I’m sick of claims of borax free slime recipes that use contact solution! They aren’t borax free! ?????

      2. Hey people
        It’s true.
Contact lens solution active ingredient is borax….

    1. I do science camps and I made some over two months ago and store it in a plastic zip lock and it is still good

  5. What contact solution do you use? I am from Germany, and things might be named a little diffrent here. So…it is something you clean your contact lenses with, right? (…we have diffrent types of that, some are only like saltet water, not what you mean, I assume….) Thanks in advance!
