How to Make a Crescent Roll Ring

This is a bit like our Leftover Ham Recipe with Crescent Rolls except in a much larger form. Same idea where the cooked meat is diced up, mixed with something creamy and wrapped inside refrigerated rolls of some kind. We use this type because it isn’t as heavy, fluffy with lots of layers of YUM that is buttery with every bite.

When I am making a bunch of Football Party Food this is always a must, two different ways if not more than that. You can use a rotisserie chicken to make this to make prep work easier for sure. Adding buffalo sauce will make it spicy but that is of course optional. You could transition it with different sauces like bbq or teriyaki too if you wanted.

Taco Ring with Crescent Rolls

I have made this with Crockpot Chicken Taco Meat right out of the pot, or what was left from the night before too. A great way to use up leftovers, made into something totally new and delicious.

  • 2 tubes crescent roll dough
  • 1/4-1/2 c buffalo sauce optional to make spicy
  • 2 c leftover chicken or other precooked chopped meat
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • 1 c cream cheese softened
  • 1/4 c green onions diced and blue cheese crumbled is great

If you wanted to make this as a Leftover Taco Meat Recipe with ground beef mixture we will explain that below. With that you basically just brown, drain, add taco seasoning and a little broth or water for flavoring. Mix in some cheese once removed from the heat and you could include black olives and/or a bit of cream cheese too if you wanted.

If the meat is cooked fresh it is best to allow it to cool down quite a bit. If you add it hot the raw dough to the taco crescent ring will get icky and kinda’ melt in a way when you are trying to wrap it all up. Same goes for if you are making individual Buffalo Chicken Rolls too.

We used poultry with this one in the photos but will explain how to use taco meat below as well. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it. In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded chicken and buffalo sauce, adjusting the amount of sauce to your desired level of spiciness.

  • Stir in the shredded cheese and softened cream cheese until well combined.
  • If desired, add chopped green onions for extra flavor.
  • Unroll crescent roll refrigerated dough. Separate into 16 triangles.
  • Arrange the crescent triangles on the baking sheet in a circular pattern, with the wide ends overlapping slightly and the pointed ends extending outward.
  • This will form a ring-like shape. Spoon the buffalo chicken mixture onto the wide ends of the bottom layer of dough triangles, forming a ring.
  • Fold the pointed ends of the triangles over the filling and tuck them under the wide ends, creating an enclosed ring.
  • Place the baking sheet with the assembled buffalo chicken crescent ring in the preheated oven. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the crescent dough is golden brown and cooked through.
  • Once the crescent ring is out of the oven, if desired, sprinkle crumbled blue cheese over the top while it’s still warm.
  • Allow to cool slightly before slicing into portions for game day. Serve Buffalo Chicken Thighs roll warm with a side of ranch or blue cheese dressing

Ground Beef Taco Ring

Instead of listed above ingredients for insides, brown 1 lb ground beef or chorizo for a few minutes, then add 1 package (1 oz) taco seasoning mix, mix in ½ cup water or broth and simmer for a few minutes.

Then remove from heat and mix in 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese until melted. Allow to cool slightly before adding into the ring shape as explained above and bake the same amount of time until golden brown. This one is fun to serve with shredded lettuce, sour cream and other favorite taco toppings on top.

Once you get the hang of how this is done you can go at it with all sorts of other combinations too. My kids have made Ham and Cheese Roll Ups with Crescent Rolls too after the holidays and that has been a hit.

Can you use puff pastry to make a taco ring?

Technically yes, but crescent rolls taco ring we share here is better with a fluffier texture. Puff pastry will have a different cook time and would need to be sliced into triangles to create the round shape. Crescents are already perforated to make prep easier.

If you want to have a whole theme with these flavors, a great duo is this and our Baked Buffalo Chicken Dip. You can serve this one with a number of different things like sliced vegetables, bruschetta toast slices, pita chips and other fun scooping items.
