How Long to Cook Hamburgers in the Oven
This takes about 20 minutes or so. Cook times will vary for a number of reasons. The thickness of the meat is the biggest factor. If you buy patties at the store like you see here they will all be the same right off the bat. If making your own with ground beef you can integrate more seasonings into your meat, or just sprinkle on top of these before cooking to add flavor.
You can use other meats too though, or mix half and half. Spicy Jimmy Dean ground sausage can add a bit of a kick with your beef or ground venison even. That is an easy way to change up the flavors and adjust the fat content. Sausage has the highest which will bind it together well where bison and wild game meats are very lean.

If you are looking for super lean, this is how long to cook ground turkey instead. I will start by saying that a bit of fat will lend a lot more flavor so I wouldn’t cut it all out. I mean you can add breadcrumbs and an egg as more of a binder but it will still not stick together as well as you’d like without anything in there.
If you are bound and determined to go healthy healthy then follow our turkey patties recipe here. We add a lot of seasonings and spices in there so you won’t miss anything.

Cooking Hamburgers in the Oven
How to make a hamburger patty is quite easy, and there are tons of variations depending on your taste buds. You can add lots of seasonings into the mix, make our meatloaf without breadcrumbs mixture and mold into patties, or keep it simple with salt and pepper.
- Start with fresh ground beef, turkey, or game meat. Avoid overworking the meat, as this can make the patties tough. Gently handle to keep it tender.
- Divide into equal portions, usually about 1/4 to 1/3 pound each. This will depend on your preference and the size of buns you’re using.
- or use directions for Ground Beef in Oven if you don’t want it in patties
- Take one portion and gently form it into a ball. Avoid compacting it.
- Place the ball on a clean surface or a piece of wax paper. Flatten the ball into a patty shape using your hands. Make slightly larger in diameter than your burger bun since it will shrink as it cooks.
- Sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper. You can also add other seasonings or spices according to your taste. Common additions include garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika.
- To prevent it from puffing up too much during cooking, make a slight indentation in the center with your thumb. This will help it cook more evenly.
- Preheat your grill, stovetop pan, oven or griddle over medium-high heat. Make sure it’s hot before adding.
Then use our timing below for our oven baked burgers recipe, make Instant Pot hamburgers with them or grill.
Everyone loves their patties more or less done in the middle. A safe internal temperature according to the USDA is 160 degrees F. That will give you a pretty well done patty without much pink at all. If you like it more tender you would want the internal burger temperature to be; Medium-rare: 130° to 135 – Medium: 140° to 145° – Medium-well: 150° to 155°

In order to get the insides just as you like it, pink enough but not too much, use a meat thermometer. Here is a guide to burger internal temperatures for you to keep in mind. To check accurately, remove from the oven and insert into the thickest part.
This isn’t just if using your oven, the temps are appropriate for any cooking method you may be trying. Even with Frozen Hamburger in an Air Fryer it is a good way to know when they are perfect for you. You don’t want it to reach 160 degrees + or they will dry out.
Prepare favorite toppings while burger patties are cooking. When done you can keep them warm on a plate covered with aluminum foil to maintain the juiciness. If you have any leftovers, chop up and use the meat to make a Hamburger HotDish the next day! Full instructions in recipe card below.
