We first baked them with hot air in our Air Fryer Apple Fritters recipe so we didn’t have to deep fry them at all in hot oil. Another great alternative you can try if you want to. With our homemade cinnamon sugar batter filled with diced fresh fruit, you can’t go wrong with these treats. (affiliate links present)

How to Bake Apple Fritters

Ok so you may be wondering how you could cook them without becoming just a large blob on a cookie sheet, we have a trick up our sleeves. Just like our cake mix donuts we used a pan to keep the dough together. In this case I didn’t want a hole in the middle so a muffin pan worked out quite well to get this done!

I love making these during the summertime when we have tons of fruit falling off of the trees. Peeled and diced up you can make all sorts of things with them and I hate letting any of them go to waste. After sharing how we made Apple Cobbler with Bisquick the other week I had to come up with something new and this was the next winner!

How to Bake Apple Fritters

Muffin Tin Apple Fritters

Now you could use a mini pan to make these too a lot faster. The downside to that size is you won’t get as much fruit into each bite, but the size is definitely fun. If you want to know how long to bake mini muffins / fritters we have info. on that here for you. Beyond the pan a small bowl and measuring cup is needed.

  • 1 1/3 c all purpose flour
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Cinnamon and granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 eggs
  • Vanilla extract – could add 1/2 apple flavor extract
  • 2/3 c milk whole
  • Butter melted, unsalted
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • 1 large fresh apple peeled and diced, or made into larger chunks as an Apple Slices Recipe
  • Just use a spray of vegetable oil into the pan so they don’t stick

Now let’s talk a minute about produce shall we? There are like a lot a lot of choices out there and there IS a big difference. You will want a variety that is firmer than others. Granny Smith apples are top of the list followed by Fuji. Other varieties get softer and will break apart in all the mixing and transferring and heat.

Old Fashioned Apple Fritters Baked

Baked Apple Fritters with Bisquick

Want to make this as a Bisquick recipe instead of totally homemade? You can! I will say that from scratch is better, hands down but I get that some days you just don’t have the time or effort. In that case you would just combine all of the ingredients below to create a batter. Then follow the baking temp and time below.

  1. 2 cups Bisquick
  2. 1/2 cups water or milk
  3. 1 egg
  4. 1/4 cup sugar
  5. 1 tsp cinnamon
  6. 1 large peeled and diced apple

Ok so I guess you could say they are a bit like Applesauce Muffins in a sense. I will say that with the boxed mix they don’t quite have the texture of a fritter recipe as the homemade batter does. The difference is the chewiness of the inside. They are a bit more dense and with more processed mixes you won’t get that.

Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray inside of muffin tin with non stick canola oil spray or line with paper liners (spraying is better). Peel and dice the apple into small bite size pieces.

  • In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients. Swirl around a whisk to distribute and break up any clumps. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture.
  • Add the eggs, milk, and vanilla. Whisk together, incorporating the flour slowly until smooth. Stir in the melted butter.
  • Place the prepared muffin pan in the oven to heat up for 5 minutes so that it is hot when you place the batter in.
  • Just before the pan is ready, add the chopped apples and the vinegar to the batter and stir to evenly distribute.
    • Do not do this step until the last minute – you want the baking soda and vinegar to react in the oven not while sitting out.
  • Scoop batter into the hot muffin tins (a 1/2 cup measuring scoop is good for this), filling to about 3/4 of the way full.
  • Place in the oven immediately. Bake for 18 minutes or until a cake tester inserted comes out clean and tops are golden brown. Do not open the oven for the first 15 minutes of the bake.
  • Allow to sit in the pan for 5 minutes before removing and putting each on a cooling rack.

Make a glaze. Simple is combining 1 cup powdered sugar with just enough milk, water or apple cider vinegar to thin out to the thickness of your liking. Pour the glaze over the un molded fritters while still hot. Allow to cool for at least 20 minutes before eating.
