You aren’t always near a campfire, and you don’t always want to create a sticky mess. So when you want the best of both worlds you can make this dessert hack called Smores in a Jar. (affiliate links present)

How to Make SMores in a Jar

We LOVE chocolate. Okay, who doesn’t!!  What comes to mind when I think of my favorite chocolate ooey gooey dessert? Well s’mores of course. It’s an amazing dessert or package up the ingredients and attach this recipe for a gift idea! That way others can make it too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

We started this whole idea with cake in a jar, way before Wicked cupcakes on Shark Tank came along. I guess I should’ve sold that idea when I came up with it because now they are making a ton of $. Using our favorite ingredients my girls and I started experimenting and look what we came up with!

smores in a jar

I like things that are SUPER easy so when I started making soda pop cake I brought that idea to these s’mores in a jar to make them even easier to throw together! That is right..you just need 2 ingredients to make this decadent chocolate cake batter which is the base to this dessert in a jar.

I used a can of Coke to make it a 2 ingredient cake, but you could substitute for a can of Dr.Pepper. If you can find chocolate soda that is amazing!! I amp the cake up even more by adding some chocolate chips too so they turn out ooey gooey inside when they’re done.

S’mores in a Jar Ingredients

  1. Devils Food cake mix
  2. 1 can of Coke or other dark soda
  3. Chocolate chips
  4. Chocolate bar, or small snack size bars
  5. Small marshmallows
  6. Graham cracker crumbs

Use these cute little 1/2 Pint Mason Jars. They are the perfect size for an individual quick easy dessert for ONE.

Can you bake in mason jars?

Yes but they should be a trusted brand like Ball and free from any cracks or chips. If there are any imperfections the heat may cause it to crack and break. You also should warm them before putting into the oven so it isn’t a dramatic cold to hot temperature change.

Here’s the printable recipe and video showing you how they’re made! These are perfect if you’re throwing a s’mores birthday party, are “glamping” in the backyard just for fun but don’t want to start a campfire, or you just want a fun dessert during the week!!

How to Bake Dessert in a Mason Jar

  • Mix together your can of soda and cake mix well.
  • Fold in your chocolate chips.
  • Place mason jars on a cookie sheet and spray non stick spray inside each one.
  • Pour 1/2 c. of your prepared cake batter mixture to the bottom of each one.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 350 F for approx. 20-23 minutes or until the middle of each one begins to become firm and barely springs back when touched gently.
  • Take out and make a small hole with a fork in the middle of each one.
  • Push 1 large marshmallow inside each one in the middle where the hole is.
    • or place on top and make it a toasted marshmallow
    • topping with mini marshmallows works too as they will melt with the heat
    • or a dollop of marshmallow fluff you can skip the next 2-3 minutes in the oven.
  • Put back into oven for 2-3 minutes just so marshmallows get soft.
  • Take out, sprinkle with crushed graham cracker mixture
  • Put small chocolate pieces in the middle or a drizzle of chocolate ganache

You could even add a dollop of peanut butter to the top if you wanted to, and ice cream is always a fun add on if you want to just add to the yum. These are best served warm but can be saved at room temperature inside freezer bags to enjoy later on. Kids love this idea as it is portioned out for them and you’ll love that there is no slicing required to serve.

What is the perfect marshmallow for smores?

For most people it is the large version. You can find large flatter versions now specific to making this sweet treat but that isn’t super necessary. Mini don’t roast well and easily fall out when trying to eat it so I wouldn’t recommend that.

How do you make s’mores without a fire?

Easy recipes are my jam and this jar recipe takes it another step further with the fun factor. Try this with any type of cake mix you want going forward, for summertime strawberry with 1/2 cup of sorbet on top is amazing too. You just can’t go wrong with smores dessert recipes!! Using the base instructions, temp and timing below there are endless possibilities when it comes to 2 ingredient cake in mason jars.

What is the proper way to make a s’more?

Originally it started with a large marshmallow roasted over a fire. 2 halves of graham crackers with 1/2 bar of chocolate inside, and then smash the mallow inside so it oozes out. Nowadays people have changed things up with using chocolate chip cooked instead of grahams or using other candy bars.
