Pepper steak in a Crockpot means you can prep quickly in the morning and when back from a busy day have a high protein meal on top of a bed of rice. Healthy and full of flavor it is just one of the easy Crockpot recipes on our site.

How to Make Pepper Steak in a Crockpot

You may have made our Crockpot Steak before with potatoes. Yes that is a good one as well but this one is like the Panda Express version you like so much, but way cheaper made from scratch. You can make it spicy if you like with red pepper flakes or keep mild for the kiddos.

When choosing the type of beef for slow cooking, it is best to pick one with more connective tissues. Usually you wouldn’t want that but those need more time to get tender so they work well in the case of Flank Steak and Gravy with vegetables as we share with you here.

Pepper Steak Ingredients

Can you put steak in slow cooker raw?

You sure can, I’ve done it with our Slow Cooker Cube Steak too and is quite cheap too. The larger the slices the longer it will take so keep that in mind depending on how long you are going to leave it in there. 6 hours is pretty ideal if you ask me. I do NOT recommend cooking on high, low and slow is the way to go, period.

  • 1.5 lbs. steak cut into 2″ 1/4″ thick slices
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 2 bell peppers sliced
  • Bamboo shoots
  • 1 can stewed tomatoes
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/4 c beef broth
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

This is not a great way of How to Cook Chuck Steak as that cut is better with less time or it will get really chewy. Something like a filet wouldn’t be a great choice either as it will become overcooked and those are better rare, and are quite expensive on top of it all too.

You want to slice the pieces thin like you do to make Steak Fajitas in the Oven. I mean you don’t have to really measure it but just eyeball it and make sure they are all about the same size so everything cooks evenly. If you don’t want the peppers to disintegrate, slice those rather thick too so they hold up well over time.

Can you cook steak in slow cooker without liquid?

Yep, the juice in the tomatoes will be enough, because the meat will emit juices too. This is one of many Cheap Crockpot Meals we have made over and over over the years. It is a bit like fajitas I guess in a sense but left alone to cook together without any real effort on your part throughout the process which is nice.

How long can you leave steak in the slow cooker?

  • Season beef with garlic powder, salt and pepper and place in slow cooker.
  • Mix together broth and cornstarch and pour on top of beef.
  • Add onion, red and green pepper and bamboo shoots.
  • Pour in stewed tomatoes and soy sauce. Mix well.
  • Cover and cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 6-8 hours cooking time.
  • Stir before serving over rice, egg noodles or chow mein.

You can swap out the meat too if you like to change things up but have a different meal overall. We have made Crockpot Chicken Fajitas with Fajita Seasoning this way as well but with a packaged seasoning.

Why is my pepper steak tough?

There are a few reasons why you may have tough pepper steak. If you used a tough cut of beef you may not have cooked it long enough to get tender, in a slow cooker is best for those cuts. When slicing before or after cooking you need to always slice against the grain so it isn’t as chewy too.

Pepper Steak Ingredients

When serving out of your Crock pot you will likely want something like white or brown rice on the side in a small bowl or underneath. You can add red pepper flakes to the top for those who want spice if you’d like.

  1. Steak, stew meat, flank steak, sirloin, or ribeye are cuts of beef used for this often. Slice thinly against the grain for optimal tenderness.
  2. Bell Peppers and Onions are the best, I like to use a few colorful bell peppers, such as green, red, and yellow, to add flavor and vibrant color to the dish. Slice the peppers into strips or chunks.
  3. Garlic that is minced fresh adds aromatic flavor to the dish. Mince the garlic cloves finely.
  4. Soy Sauce provides saltiness and depth of flavor to the sauce. Use low-sodium soy sauce if desired.
  5. Beef Broth adds richness and savory flavor to the sauce. You can use store-bought, bouillon cubes, or make homemade.
  6. Cornstarch slurry is used as a thickening agent for the sauce. It helps create a glossy and velvety texture.
  7. Black Pepper and salt is a key ingredient in pepper steak, providing its distinctive peppery flavor. Be generous with it.
  8. Sesame Oil can add a nutty aroma and depth of flavor to the dish. Use it sparingly as it is quite potent. If you make this as a stir fry I would use a bit of this and the rest vegetable.

Optional Ingredients used to customize your pepper steak by adding ingredients such as ginger, chili flakes, green onions, or mushrooms for extra flavor and texture. Brown sugar can add a touch of sweetness if you are interested in that.
