How do people cook corned beef and cabbage in a pressure cooker?

We will guide you thru cooking a brisket in this machine, step by step, in the recipe card below. It is easy to do with potatoes and beer, that is it!! Then you can throw together our pressure cooker fried cabbage after, or separately in another pot and serve together.

Do you rinse corned beef before cooking?

Please don’t. Whether you bought a ready to cook corned beef or you cured your own, if you rinse the meat you’ll be rinsing away all the flavor!

The whole reason this cut of meat is so flavorful is because it is fully infused with a brine. Some do choose to run it under cold water to reduce the sodium intake, but just know it will drastically change the flavor you love.

Can you overcook corned beef?

Yes, this goes with any meat. If so it will become tough. You need it to have a lot of liquid to cook in and in a pressure cooker is by far the best way to make it!

These are the ingredients and style of meat we chose to use. Sometimes you don’t have a choice between a flat or point cut, the store just has one type. If I had a choice I would probably choose flat cut but we have made them all and they’re all delicious.

On a wooden table sits a tempting array: cabbage, red potatoes, canned beer, and a corned beef brisket package. Perfect for creating the ultimate Ninja Foodi corned beef and cabbage feast.

Ingredients

  1. Foodi or Instant Pot will work too
  2. Corned beef – 3 lbs. is usually best
    1. This is a point cut brisket, there’s flat cut and round as well
    2. Seasoning packet comes with it inside the bag
  3. Potatoes – either 4 large red potatoes or 2 large russet
  4. Beer – I just buy what is on sale, I love cooked corned beef in beer vs. another liquid
  5. Cabbage, you’ll only use the top large 8-10 pieces
  6. Onion – optional but a great addition to serve as an easy side dish with the potatoes

Variations and Substitutions

You can substitute for water or broth if you’d prefer but the beer makes it taste amazing. Use whatever type you like, I prefer blonde ale but you do need the amount of liquid posted below.

We like to serve with mustard or whisk in a bit of honey to make a savory sweet spread once it is done!! Yes, we are using potatoes as a trivet!! That means they will become yummier than you could ever imagine. You could use a steamer basket or trivet though.

We don’t really drink beer here so I only have it on hand to make this and our 3 ingredient beer bread recipe which is actually a great side with this!

What is the best Corned Beef and Cabbage Recipe?

That depends on whom you are asking. We have a few depending on our mood that year. In the past we only made slow cooker corned beef brisket and it was fabulous. This is just another way but takes a fraction of the time and comes out just as good. You would get the same tenderness either way.

How Long do you cook Ninja Foodi corned beef brisket?

Actual cook time is 1 hour 25 minutes but other factors should be considered. It will take 15 minutes to allow the pressure to naturally release when done and it will take about 20 minutes for the initial pressure to build up in order for the timing to actually start. So…add that up…..

Should you put the fat side up or down when cooking corned beef brisket?

This piece was quite lean. Whatever you have, put the fattiest side facing up. This will allow all those juices and moisture to melt off and drip across the rest to keep it nice and tender.

When cooking corned beef, cabbage and potatoes do you put them all in the same pot?

Brisket and potatoes can be cooked together but cabbage should not be added into your pot until the end. The leaves don’t take but a few minutes to get tender so wait until the end to achieve the perfect texture overall. I use whole russet potatoes as trivets most of the time actually!

Do you cook corned beef in Ninja Foodi the same as the Instant Pot?

Yes, you can use the same instructions. The only need to air fry this at all is if you wanted to bake some mustard sauce on the very top, otherwise you just pressure cook until tender.

If you wonder why I use potatoes as trivets instead of using a trivet with handles, this is why. These babies soak up all the flavors inside the pot which makes these out of this world.

How to Cook Ninja Foodi Corned Beef and Cabbage

Time needed: 1 hour and 30 minutes

Ninja Foodi Corned Beef and Cabbage

  1. Add edible trivets

Now lay your potatoes on the bottom so they act as a trivet for you meat. Lay your piece with the fat side facing up on your taters so it’s flat and won’t tip over

  2. Add liquid

Pour your beer, or other liquid, over the top and sprinkle your spice packet (inside the bag) on your corned beef on top.

  3. Cook

Close your pressure cooker lid and steam valve and set to high pressure cooking time for 1 hour 25 minutes (for a 3 lb. piece) Allow steam to naturally release for 15 minutes A quick release will not allow it to become quite as tender, releasing pressure slowly is key to the best corned beef ever!

How do you cut cabbage for corned beef?

Usually you don’t cut it at all and just peel the leaves off as whole. You can place on top of your meat and “steam” for 1 more minute at the end if you’d like, or cook separately and serve together. If you’re looking for more Ninja Foodi recipes we have many.

What to serve with Ninja Foodi corned beef and cabbage

What can you make with leftover corned beef?

This pressure cooker corned beef soup is something we always look forward to the next day. With a chowder creamy like base this meat adds a ton of flavor and protein to it. Add potatoes for a hearty meal you will want to make over and over again with your Homemade corned beef hash.

Equipment

  • 1 ninja foodi pressure cooker

Ingredients

  • 2.5-3 lb corned beef brisket
  • 12 oz beer
  • 4 large red potatoes, or 2 large russet cut in half
  • 1 onion, sliced, optional
  • 1/2 head cabbage

Instructions

  • Rinse potatoes. If using large red potatoes set them in the middle close together, use similar sizes so you can set beef on top of them. If using 2 large russets slice them both in half and set them cut side down into middle of pot. These will be your trivet.
  • Set corned beef piece on top of potatoes so it sits flat.
  • Pour beer on top of meat.
  • Sprinkle packet of corned beef seasoning on top of meat, it is included inside your meat pouch.
  • Close your pressure cooking lid (one that isn’t attached), and close steam valve.
  • Turn Ninja Foodi on, then press pressure button. Set to high for 1 hr 25 minutes (for 2.5-3 lbs. this time works well). Press start. Allow to naturally release pressure for about 15 minutes when done.
  • Release rest of steam if there is any after about 15 min. Remove piece of corned beef and set on cutting board, cover.
  • Remove potatoes, put in a bowl and cover so they stay warm.
  • Cut bottom off cabbage and separate the top layer of leaves so you have about 8-10 large pieces. Slice your onion into large pieces.
  • Add onions into pot with juices, then add cabbage leaves.
  • Put pressure lid back on. Close steam valve. Turn pot on, press pressure, high for 3 minutes. Press start.
  • Do a quick release when done.
  • Slice corned beef and serve with some potatoes, onions, and cabbage from the pot. Enjoy

  1. Question- Do you use any of the juices/brine that was in the package with the corned beef or just drain the meat and then add the beer?

    1. I open the package over the sink and pull the meat out, the juices drain into the sink. Sometimes there isn’t a spice packet rather they are already on one side. If there is just rinse it off, set beef into pot and sprinkle seasonings on top after pouring beer over the top.

  2. I’ve been doing this method for years. Always awesome. My only modification to to taters. I make mashed and mix the cabbage and taters together with mixer. Gives them a nice texture. โ˜†โ˜†โ˜†โ˜†โ˜† every time.

    1. Ok so that means do not touch the knob that seals in the steam, that you closed at the beginning. If you don’t touch that the pressure will still slowly release but it takes a while and keeps the meat inside nice and moist. If it said for example natural release for 15 minutes you would wait until screen said 15 after it was done and then you can flip open that valve and let the rest out.

    2. @Chris, sorry I didn’t get an answer to my question. I figured out how to do a natural release. You were right I will not cooking corned beef any other way.

  3. This is the best corned beef recipe I have ever made, and I have been making corned corned beef for over 50 years every way you can image. You have hit it out of the ball park ! thank you! The Mustard Sauce is out of this world too! It is June 3, 2022 in Mesquite NV and we are having Corned Beef and Cabbage! The Foodi is my Friend and this receipe is my best friend any time of the year, been making it on St. Paddy’s Day for 3 yrs! Do a 4+ lb which takes about 113 min. Thank you so much

  4. I used 3.5 lb round corned beef. Unfortunately, I used 24oz of a 2yr old Redds Wicked Apple Hard Ale 8% Alcohol (a friend left it a few visits ago) and all the vegetables which I put home grown carrots (they were sweet -best tasting of them all), cabbage, green beans tasted like beer still lmao. I am not a beer drinker so don’t know the difference. The corned beef was good but was too salty. Oh well, my husband didn’t like the beer tasting vegetables- it was ok to me. Next time, maybe soak the corned beef in warm water to get off some of the saltiness since we are sensitive to it and maybe a little less strong beer! This is the first time we used the ninja -it has been sitting in our kitchen for a year! Not bad and love the product so far! Thanks for the recipe ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. My Lady this Corned Beef and cabbage came out so WONDERFUL!!!! I and my husband really enjoyed it and now it will be a house hold dinner… Thanks for such a great recipe…

  6. Loved the recipe. Thank you so much. The only thing I did differently is used broth instead of beer.

  7. Which is it?? First you say DON’T rinse the corned beef then the 1st step is… RINSE corned beef…
