If you have never thought outside of the box to make a dessert egg rolls vs. savory you’re in for a real treat! Using packaged or our homemade egg roll wrappers you can fill with chocolate and fruit or a canned filling. (affiliate links present)

Can you make dessert style egg rolls?

Egg Roll Desserts are possible, yes!! If you’ve only made savory frozen egg rolls in air fryer with cabbage and meat inside. You’re missing out y’all!! That is not the only way, not even close. Think about it, the outsides aren’t salty or just made for dinnertime. Once you add something sweet and take a bite you’ll be a believer too.

If you wanted to start off super simple, grab a package of square wrappers at the grocery store. They are in the refrigerated section near the bagged cole slaw typically. Then head over to the baking section and grab a can of your favorite flavor. Typically you’ll find mixed berry, cherry, strawberry and apple pie filling.

How do you make sweet egg rolls?

You really only 2 ingredients to make most of these. Pie filling is a great option and can be used alone to make something super easy like our Peach Cobbler Egg Rolls. To make creamy you can fold together softened cream cheese with marshmallow fluff and pair with your fruit filling for an OMG over the top delicious treat.

How do you wrap an egg roll?

Whether you are using homemade egg roll wrappers or store bought you will want to fill and seal them the same way so they don’t leak. First get your filling ready and prepped so you can create an assembly line of sorts to make a bunch. Think of it as a burrito really, with a tortilla and the stuff in the center.

  1. Have a small dish of water near you
  2. Spoon about 2 tbsp of filling into the center of your square wrapper, positioned with 1 point facing you.
  3. Fold sides over the top of your filling.
  4. Lift the end that is furthest from you over the top of your filling, all the way around tucking it under the filling slightly.
  5. Then grab the sealed roll thus far and continue rolling it towards you.
  6. Wet your finger and brush along the V (like you would seal an envelope) and roll all the way up allowing the water to stick to the other side and seal shut.

You can see what I mean here by the folding process. The last fold is the most important so you can ensure that it really sticks and doesn’t leak. That is the most important because leaking not only makes a huge mess but you lose all the goodness out of the center as well. A tragedy for sure.

Banana Egg Rolls

Nutella Banana Egg Rolls

You can see an example below where we added 1/3 – 1/2 of a banana with Nutella.

  • Spoon 1 tbsp of Nutella in the middle of an eggroll wrapper.
  • Add half a banana on top (or fill middle with pie filling).
  • Roll up as directed above to seal shut.
    • Another option is to: Start by folding up the bottom corner, then the left corner into the middle, then the top corner down, and the right corner into the middle.
  • Repeat this process for the remaining wrappers.

If you want to warm and crisp them in the air fryer works well, explained below. If you choose to deep fry in hot oil you will want to turn every few minutes until browned and then set on paper towels to absorb excess oil.

Sweet Egg Rolls

How to cook dessert egg rolls in air fryer

If you want a healthier version I would suggest that you air fry in the basket sprayed with non stick cooking oil spray. Lay them inside and spray the tops with oil as well to crisp. Cook in a preheated machine at 380 degrees F in the air fryer for 4-6 minutes or until golden and crispy, flipping halfway thru.

Philadelphia Cheesecake Egg Rolls

If you use pie filling a dollop of cheesecake dip works great in there too to bring a creaminess to the dish. You really only need a container of softened cream cheese and small tub of marshmallow fluff to make the cheater version of that. 😉

  • We use this to make our cheesecake egg rolls, which are always a hit.
  • You can use fresh fruit to make any variety you really like by softening them in a pan with a bit of sugar like blueberry egg rolls or even mixed fruit.
  • Roll up chocolate chips, mini marshmallows and a bit of crushed grahams for S’Mores egg rolls sometime.
  • You can use fresh or canned fruit with marshmallow fluff together inside.
  • Cheesecake egg rolls can just use the cream cheese filling combo explained below with a bit of vanilla extract. Even without any fruit inside this in itself is delish.

The possibilities are endless really. Sprinkle with powdered sugar after they are done to a golden brown. NO paper towels necessary to absorb the excess oil at the end if you use your air fryer.

If you are feeding a crowd you may need to cook egg rolls in batches. To keep them warm set on a cooling rack, on a baking sheet, covered with foil until they are all done. They really are the best right out of the fryer though and since they are so simple to assemble I would suggest doing them “to order”.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Egg Rolls

Want your kids to think you’re a hero? Try this combo!! That’s right, PB&J is oh so delicious warmed and wrapped into this little burrito like hand held morsel. Just a tbsp of each inside is great and you can vary it up with all different types like grape, marmelade or even apple butter. Better yet make Instant Pot jam with fresh fruits like huckleberries.

How do you reheat leftovers?

These are really great fresh, can be saved but the texture will definitely change. If you really want to try and enjoy the next day wait until they are cooled. Then wrap in foil and into the fridge they go. Next day throw them back into the fryer for 1-2 minutes to warm and crisp up just a bit again and enjoy another time.

You really don’t need a dip like savory air fryer egg rolls but if you just can’t go without it you could use whipped topping or caramel sauce. Make up your own yummy combination if you will and let us know if yours is different so we can try that one too!
