Copycat Costco Muffin Recipes
No I don’t work for this popular big box store and have the exact recipe but think we came pretty darn close with this one here. Jumbo chocolate chocolate chip muffins are really what they should be called but where they came from describes them perfectly too.
Jumbo Chocolate Muffins Recipe
It is one of our favorite stores, even though it’s a bit scary to allow my husband to go alone. 😉 A while back I created a roundup of Costco air fryer recipes because cooking frozen foods in that machine is where it’s at. Now we went to the sweeter end of things to satisfy those late night (or morning) cravings.

Do we really need to talk about the nutrition of these? They are a real treat my friends so let’s just move on and enjoy them without thinking about the other fluff, but I will share it if you really want. 😉
I mean they aren’t deemed a health food, all in moderation friends. If you really need to know it’s about 700 calories if you ate the whole thing. There is nutritional information on the box for all varieties so take note of that if it is important to you before consuming.
Well you can’t just buy one but you get 12 for $7.99 so if you divided that out that would come to .67 cents each or so which is pretty great. Homemade is always cheaper though and you can adjust it as you wish. Add semi sweet chocolate chips to make exactly the same or leave out if you would rather.
How to Make Costco Muffins
You can buy a whole flat of this type or a mixture of a few like lemon poppyseed muffins and of course their jumbo blueberry muffins too. We like a mixture of a few so each of us can choose which we want that day. I will say the chocolate is quite dense and filling so typically half is plenty in one sitting.
- The way to make these so large is to own a jumbo muffin tin pan like this one.
- You can use it to make all types of varieties well beyond this dessert style.
Costco Chocolate Muffins Ingredients
I do really like to use muffin paper liners so they slide right out and don’t stick. You can grab them better in the morning too and slice in half without as much mess either.
- All purpose flour is needed, make sure you measure flour properly so they aren’t too dense
- Cocoa powder to get that rich chocolate flavor to them
- White sugar
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Milk
- Greek yogurt makes them super moist
- A few eggs, room temperature is always best
- Vegetable oil
- 2 c chocolate chips or chocolate chunks to make them double chocolate muffins
You could add crushed nuts too but that wouldn’t be like they sell them. I am a hard no when it comes to nuts in my baked goods too, soft doesn’t allow for any crunch my friends.
How to make bakery-style jumbo chocolate muffins
Key to keeping them as fluffy and moist as chocolate cake; Do not over bake them y’all, jut enough baking time without overdoing it is very very important. In order to make sure this is achieved keep an eye on them at the end closely. As soon as the middle springs back when lightly touched in the center take them out. Remove them from the pan too or they will continue to bake, no good.
Same tips go for when you Bake Mini Muffins too. Keep ’em as tender as possible y’all.
- Preheat oven to 400F. Line a jumbo muffin pan with 6 large muffin liners. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, white sugar, baking powder and salt until completely combined.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the milk, greek yogurt, eggs, vanilla extract and vegetable oil.
- Stir well until wet ingredients are well combined into the dry ingredients and no dry steaks remain in the batter.
- Add the chocolate chips and gently fold in. Divide the muffin batter evenly amongst the 6 prepared liners.
- Bake for 5 minutes. Reduce heat from 400 F to 350F and continue to bake for 25-30 minutes baking time
- remove jumbo sized muffins when your inserted toothpick comes out mostly clean with crumbs attached
You can jump to recipe below and try these, we have two other versions below that they make as well you can try. If you don’t eat them all in one sitting the best way to save muffins is to keep the air out. Air is the enemy and will dry them out quickly so freezer bags work well. Suck all the air out every time you take one out for best results.
- Costco poppyseed muffins are great with a glass of Dalgona coffee y’all
- Add our favorite muffin crumb topping to the top.

How long do costco chocolate muffins last?
You are way better off keeping them in the fridge for up to 14 days. If you only want to enjoy a few a week you are better off freezing half of them. That way you can enjoy a few out of the fridge kept moist and then take a few out of the freezer to defrost on the counter over a few hours, or microwave for about 1 minute.
Once you have the special pan you can go on to make all other sorts of varieties. Use your favorite basic muffin recipe of your choice and then just adjust the bake time and temp to the details of this one here. Each oven is slightly different so once you figure out the exact timing where crumbs are attached to your toothpick take note.
Moist is key and that will be anywhere from 25 minutes to half an hour. Somewhere in between will be just right to keep them super moist, like 27 works for us but test what is right for your kitchen for future batches.
