Dump Cake with Cherry Pie Filling Recipe

We love easy desserts and unlike traditional dump cakes, you won’t find powdery spots of mix or an overwhelming butter taste in this one. It really did come out pretty fantastic.

I first started by creating these blueberry pie filling dump cake cupcakes that were so good. I thought I would take it from there and create other easy dump cake recipes like this one that’s kinda’ like a cherry pie cake of sorts. You can see just how moist it came out…….

A close-up of a person's hand holding a spatula with a cherry pie cake slice made from cherry pie filling. The cake has a fluffy texture, containing dark, maroon-colored fruit bits within it. A pan with the remaining dump cake is in the background.

3 Ingredient Cherry Dump Cake Ingredients

  1. Box of yellow cake mix – white cake mix or cherry works too, extra moist style is best
    1. Any dry cake mix works, you could try chocolate cake mix too
  2. Can of pie filling – Duncan Hines 21 or 20 oz. cans are perfect
  3. Eggs will allow it to become fluffy

Could add 1/2 tsp almond extract if you wanted to incorporate that flavor or sprinkle chopped pecans on too if you want some texture. I used a 1.5 qt. baking pan / dish but 8×8 pan / baking dish that is square is more common and perfect too. You’ll want to serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

Like our cherry cheesecake monkey bread, we topped this one with vanilla ice cream for a few of us. I preferred it as is and even had a little slice for breakfast the next day. ๐Ÿ˜‰ This time we used strawberry cake mix and cherry pie filling. You could opt for yellow, white, or make a chocolate cherry version if you prefer. The taste will vary a bit with every different choice, but the color will be the biggest difference you will see.

We call this an easy cherry dump cake but really you can call it whatever you want! You kinda’ just throw it all in there once it is incorporated and bake until lightly golden brown. Here is all you have to do;

How to Make Cake with Cherry Pie Filling and Cake Mix

  1. Mix together your eggs with your boxed cake mix to moisten.
  2. GENTLY fold in your pie filling so the large pieces of fruit don’t get pulverized.
  3. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees and spray the inside of your pan with non stick spray.
  4. Pour batter in baking dish and smooth out so it’s even across the entire pan.
  5. Bake for 35 minutes or until middle feels like it is firming up, not jiggly.
    • use a toothpick in center to ensure it is not still wet
  6. Allow to cool and set up more for at least 15 minutes, or room temperature, once you take it out of the oven.

The longer it cools the easier it is to make pretty slices instead of scooping it out with a large spoon. A family favorite treat either way. 10 minutes before serving take out ice cream so it’s easier to scoop.

Can you bake into cupcakes?

You can. They are super fun made in a muffin pan. You just spoon the batter into lined muffin cups to make 3 ingredient cake mix muffins like we did here.

Cherry Dump Cake with 1 Can of Pie Filling

I would say that this serves 6 people with medium sized servings. If you were to serve it with a scoop of ice cream on top you could get away with smaller pieces, so maybe 8. For larger or doubled you’d need to use a much larger dish so it could spread out and get done in the center.

Other Cake Recipes with Pie Filling you’ll love

This and these other choices come in very handy when company shows up at your door in the evening and you want to serve something. I also love having these in my back pocket when I’m craving something sweet but have little to no energy. Same with our cherry cobbler with cake mix which turns out more crumbly.

  1. I watched the video for three ingredient dump cake and it says no butter required. This is confusing so if you do add the 2 tbsp. of butter — do you melt it and add to the batter or on top? I see it described both ways in the recipes posted.

  2. The original recipe I saw says to put the 2 tbsp of melted butter on top, when I clicked here you say to mix with the batter. Which is the correct method or is either way okay?

    1. I would defrost first, drain and then use with our tart cherry cobbler recipe. This one uses pie filling which has more than just the cherries in it.

  3. Hello! Is it possible to bake the 3 ingredient dump cake in a 9×9 square pan instead of an 8×8 pan?

  4. Can you make ahead cans freeze?
Also I want to make the recipe with devils food cake. Same 3 ingredients recipe. Will it work.?

  5. We make it with devils food cake mix, 2 eggs and cherry pie filling mix. We use 9×13 glass pan at 30 minutes for 350 degrees F. Sometimes I sprinkle a cup of chocolate chips on top after baking. Cool before serving.

Thanks for the recipe…I had heard of the recipe, but didnโ€™t know the proportions or baking temperature. Weโ€™ve made it several times to applause from the family!

  6. One box of cake mix is typically enough for a 9×13 pan. Won’t an 8×8 be too small? Thanks!

    1. @Elizabeth Remes, no it won’t be to much for the 8×8 because you aren’t mixing the cake according to the box directions. You are simply dumping the cake mix into the cherry filling & folding it, pouring in pan, then melted butter on top & bake.
