Peanut Butter Cake Mix Brownies
Ok so I am a big dessert lover, and peanut butter is on the top of the list of my favorite flavors! This is definitely one of our favorite boxed cake mix hacks that comes out perfectly ooey gooey every time.
Different than our Brookies with Brownie Mix and Cookie Dough, this time we didn’t layer, we added the peanut butter chocolate flavors together in one 8×8 inch pan I love and wahhlahhh, perfection.
Cake Mix Peanut Butter Brownie Ingredients
- Cake mix – Betty Crocker works great, 15.25 oz., only dry ingredient
- Peanut butter – we like creamy best for this
- Eggs are best at room temperature
- Peanut butter chips – or use a mix of chocolate & peanut butter chips
- White chocolate chips – or semi sweet chocolate chips
- Crushed peanuts – optional, we didn’t add bc I don’t like nuts but if you do it would be a good addition
- 8×8 baking dish – I like using glass pans personally
- cooking spray so prepared pan with brownie mix doesn’t stick or line with parchment paper
- Large bowl to mix together the brownie batter with a rubber spatula

Can I substitute peanut butter for oil in cake mix?
Yes you can. In this case we are using cake mix to make this delectable treat so we add both but if you were using brownie mix you could use this instead of oil. This not only adds a dual of flavors but also is healthier than vegetable oil especially using a natural one. Sunflower or any other nut butters work.
How to Make Peanut Butter Brownies from Cake Mix
- Mix your dry cake mix, peanut butter, eggs and oil in a bowl well until combined and no powder is showing.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees now.
- Fold in any flavored chips and if you choose to add crushed peanuts fold them in too.
- Spray an 8×8 pan with non stick spray or line with parchment paper.
- Spoon batter into pan and spread out so it is an even thickness across the pan so it cooks evenly.
- Place into the middle rack of your oven for about 25 minutes or until the edges are a light brown.
If you want another layer of yum you can add peanut butter frosting or put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top once they’re cooled.
How do you tell if brownies are done?
A toothpick inserted will come out relatively clean with a little bit of “wetness” or moist crumbs attached as I say to be perfect. ๐ Like cookies made with cake mix you also want to let them cool in the pan until they are almost room temperature, or at least for 20 minutes so they continue baking in the hot pan and stay ooey gooey.
I will say when it comes to this treat there is a large range of what people enjoy. Some love really crispy edges and more of a cakey consistency. We like them just on the verge of being undercooked like our better than sex cookie bars.
Peanut Butter Brownies in Air Fryer
Don’t want to heat up your house? You can use our directions on making air fryer brownies temperature and timing for these. You would have to cook in batches as the pan that fits in the drawer will only bake half the batter at a time.
Peanut Butter Cookie Brownies
I took this picture of our cooked peanut butter cookie dough so you could see what they look like when you should take them out. Just barely golden brown on the edges and do NOT cut them until they are completely cool either.
Ideally store your brownies in an air tight container with a piece of parchment paper in between so they don’t stick. Small freezer bags can be used too. Make sure all air is removed before zipping closed. 1-2 days is ideal to maintain moisture. Some people add a slice of bread to the top of them to increase the moisture in the container.
Do you store brownies in the fridge?
I typically do not. They stay moister at room temperature. You could freeze them for longer storage by cutting them into squares first. Then wrap each one well in plastic wrap and put them all in a freezer bag. Remove air and zip tight. They should last up to 3 months this way. BUT fresh is always best!!

- 1/2 c white chocolate chips, optional
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 c vegetable oil

- Fold in chocolate chips/peanut butter chips and if you choose to add crushed peanuts fold them in too.

- Spoon batter into pan and spread out so it is an even thickness across the pan so it cooks evenly.
- Place into the middle rack of your oven for about 25 minutes or until the edges are a light brown. (if you're a bit at altitude you might need 30 min. until edges are golden brown)

Sorry, I read the comments and found my answer about doubling the recipe. I always need to use 9×13 because of large family. Perhaps you could mention this in recipes where it can be doubled. Thanks
How would I use this recipe in a 9×13 pan?
