This is the answer to how do you cook orzo on stove, in pressure cooker, in a rice cooker or in the microwave so it doesn’t stick or get mushy. The ratio of orzo to water and how to make it better (like cooking it in our Instant Pot Chicken Crack Soup recipe) is here.
What is orzo? It is a type of pasta that is small, almost like a large grain of rice. The name derived from the Italian word for barley, made from durum wheat just like other types of noodles. Cooked to slightly al dente it is often times served as a side dish and can be made cheesy with parmesan if you’d like. (affiliate links present)
How Long to Cook Orzo
The cook time varies from 4-20 minutes depending on what cooking method you choose to follow. Quickest would be a tie between Instant Pot (adding in the time to come to pressure) and in a pot on the stovetop. The longest would be in a rice cooker. Our pictures here are focusing on stove which is the most common method but we will discuss them all.
What is the ratio of orzo to water?
Just like in our directions for how to cook arborio rice, it requires 1:2 in most cases. I feel in a pressure cooker it is better to add just a tad less but we will discuss that more later. Similar to long grain white rice you can then add seasonings of your choice but a pinch of salt is the most common add in.
How long does it take to boil orzo?
You don’t add this tiny pasta into the water until it is boiling, that is key. With a dash of olive oil (so it doesn’t stick) and a pinch of salt for flavor from that point it takes about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Timing varies a bit but until water is mostly absorbed is what you’re looking for. Al dente is the perfect texture for this.
Can you use chicken broth instead of water?
Of course, and that is actually a great idea to add flavor. If serving with beef, add beef stock instead. Vegetable broth is a great option as well. If you just want a touch of flavor, use half water and half this. I will do this often when making our Ninja Foodi wild rice since I feel that is rather bland without a little sodium.
Can you cook orzo in soup?
You could!! A great alternative to use this to make an entire meal. You could make our Instant Pot Chicken Rice Soup but with this instead of Jasmine without changing the cook time at all. It will be a bit softer this way since there is a lot more cooking liquid but that is to be expected and an easy meal using rotisserie chicken.
How to Cook Orzo in an Instant Pot
Similar to How to Cook 2 Cups Instant Pot White Rice, this requires a bit less liquid than 1:1. It is best to combine 1 cup pasta + 1 3/4 cup liquid of choice + 1 tsp olive oil so it doesn’t stick together. Stir to combine (with any seasonings you would like), close lid and steam valve and set to 4 minutes at high pressure. When done immediately do a quick release of steam. Lift lid and fluff, serve immediately.
I find this variety takes just a bit less time than How Long to Cook Rice a Roni Instant Pot, but it is pretty similar. A wonderful option if you want to set it and forget it, and/or using your stovetop to make something else.

Can you cook orzo in the microwave?
You can actually and that is a great option if you are living in a small space or hotel room. Follow these directions where you just need a bowl, plastic wrap (and pot holders are handy). Heated on 100% power for about 8 minutes, stirring halfway thru, until liquid is absorbed this is an easy way to cook it too.
What button do you use to cook orzo in a rice cooker?
You just add one part pasta, two parts water and any seasonings you want. Close your lid and push the white rice button on your machine. If it only has one button it is likely for long-grain which is the same timing for this. Brown rice timing would be too long and make it mushy so don’t use that.
Do you make orzo the same as rice?
Both are easy side dish ideas for sure and cooked very similar, yes. You use double the water, don’t really want it to stick or get mushy and it is best to fluff it at the end in a sense. Both are simple, family friendly and relatively inexpensive.
How do you add more flavor?
You can sauté minced garlic and onions a bit in olive oil in your pan first, set aside, and fold in when done. Add finely diced vegetables like bell peppers, spinach, or cherry tomatoes during the last few minutes of cooking. OR stir in some feta, shredded parmesan, or mozzarella cheese for a creamy, cheesy dish.
Yes, if done properly. Once completely cooled to room temperature you should toss the cooled orzo with a small amount of olive oil or a melted pat of butter. This helps prevent it from sticking together when stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
You do need to add some moisture, butter is best before reheating. Put into a bowl with a small pat of butter on top in the microwave for 45 seconds or so until warmed. 2 Tbsp. of broth works as well to improve the texture.
