Air Fryer Dorito Chicken Wings

If you are new to our website you should know that I share a lot of easy air fryer recipes. At least 1 new each week and maybe more if we created a winner that just can’t wait. My kids are growing up and actually enjoy cooking now. As teens they now come up with their own creations sometimes, and I love that.

We are all kinda’ a think outside of the box kind of family so naturally they would think of something beyond breadcrumbs. I mean how come this didn’t come to me? Since they are young and spicy is all the rage they chose flamin’ hot Doritos of course. You could use any style you wanted though.

Dorito Crusted Chicken Wings

If you wanted a milder version you could choose the good old fashioned Cool Ranch or nacho cheese varieties too. Or make a few different batches and see which suits your tastebuds best. With this basic idea of how it is done you could choose just about anything else too like Cheetos, pretzels or even pork rinds.

You can air fry or use a deep fryer too if you prefer. I will explain how to make these in an air fryer or Ninja Foodi wings below. If you fried them then it would take less time for sure but add some fat as well so decide for yourself.

  1. You will want a bag of your favorite chips, you can see the bag we used below.
  2. A few eggs whisked will help your crumbs stick on nicely.
  3. Use a bit of olive oil spray so they don’t stick. Spray a bit on top if you want them extra crispy.
  4. And defrosted wings of course. This will not work with frozen chicken wings in air fryer as the coating won’t stick.

Then enjoy as is or with a few of our chicken wing dipping sauces.

Doritos Crusted Chicken Bites

I am sure you have made hot wings in air fryer before, but I bet you just used a sauce for the spice. I mean those are a winner too but add a bit of crunchy crispiness with that heat and OH MY. Can you taste it right now, like thru the screen, a little bit huh? 😉 You could do this same thing with cubed chicken breasts too, without the bones!

Can I use potato chips instead of breadcrumbs?

You totally can, and for things way beyond coating chicken wings too y’all. If you realize you’ve run out and in the midst of making meatloaf they work great for that too. Only thing to remember is there is a decent amount of salt on them so you may want to decrease or omit the sodium in your recipe all together with these.

How do you get breading to stick to chicken wings?

First off you need to dry the skins. Best way to do this is to lay on a few paper towels, fold over and gently press down. The less moisture the better it will work. Then sip in whisked eggs, and into the crumbs they go. Whether you air fry wings or deep fry them this is the best technique.

Doritos Crusted Wings

Potato chip fried chicken wings have been done before, but not like this. Most use regular salted and crushed Lays style stuff. Great start but this takes it way beyond the average yum. There are two ways to really turn them from bite size into fine crumbs. You can crush the chips in a gallon freezer bag, zip and smash or use a food processor.

The latter works better and is less messy, especially if your bag busts open and then your kitchen is a total disaster. I mean it has happened before with other recipes so just wanted to throw that one out there. Now let’s get to starting your assembly line;

Once you have your chicken skin nice and dry you will want to dip into the egg wash of sorts. Allow the excess to drip off before coating with your crunch. You could do this same thing with chicken strips, air fryer chicken tenders or large chunks of breasts like our air fryer boneless wings.

Larger pieces will just need a bit longer at the end, maybe closer to 12-14 minutes instead of 10.

  • Use a food processor or crush in a freezer bag about 3 cups of Doritos until they become fine crumbs. Pour into a shallow bowl.
  • Whisk eggs in another bowl and set aside.
  • Lay wings on paper towels and fold over. Gently press down to remove as much of the moisture off of the skin. Preheat air fryer to 350 F for 5 minutes.
  • One at a time dip each wing into the egg, then into the crumbled chips coating well. Shake off any excess.
  • Spray inside of air fryer basket with non stick spray and lay each coated wing inside without overlapping. Cook for 10 minutes cooking time.
  • Flip wings over and continue cooking for another 10 minutes or until they are crispy chicken crunchy on the outside.

Then enjoy. You can serve in a large bowl or laid out on a baking sheet with all sorts of different dips as a snack or meal.
