Easy cake mix with pudding and sour cream recipe makes boxed taste like it’s from a bakery! Use chocolate, strawberry, vanilla or any Duncan Hines bundt cake flavor you love to make the moistest fork tender dessert.
This is literally the best cake mix hack ever friends!! Yes you can make it as directed on the back of the box but with a few tweaks you can use that as the base to something absolutely amazing. Instead of water add pudding mix and sour cream, you’ll never go back after this recipe. (affiliate links present)
Adding Pudding To Boxed Cake Mix
Ok so you may have bought the Betty Crocker box at the store that said “with pudding inside”, this takes that one step further…..and is to die for! Skip adding all that water y’all and add ingredients that make it so tender it sticks to your fork when gently pressed down. I have made tons of pudding cake recipes in the past, this one adds sour cream though that tops the list.
I went for chocolate with chocolate this time but you can mix and match all different flavors. In the Fall I make Cake Mix Pumpkin Pudding Cake with spice mix and vanilla Jello that everyone just raves over. Once you make this one way you will want to try all the combinations for sure. Let us know your favorite below once you try a few combos. 😉

Cake Mix with Pudding and Sour Cream
Yes, we in fact use both of these things to make it super super moist. Yes you could leave out one or the other but let me tell you that both brings it to a new degree of wonderment. 😉 I recommend regular pudding, not instant, and full fat sour cream, not low fat. We aren’t counting calories here friends.
Ingredients
- 1 box cake mix chocolate used
- 1 box chocolate pudding mix 3.4 oz., not instant, chocolate used
- Sour cream
- Eggs
- Vegetable oil
- Warm water or 1/2 cup liquid of your choice
Variations
You can use any boxed cake mix flavor. If you use vanilla I would use the same corresponding pudding mix so they match and further enhance the overall taste. Instead of water you could use soda!! With chocolate you could use Coca-Cola to boost the cocoa flavors in every bite, or strawberry pop with that dry mix for added oomph. 1/4 cup of chocolate chips is a great add in too.
Want to add fresh fruit into the mix too? We have done this with our Cake Mix Banana Pudding Cake with some diced into the batter and more on the top.
Dairy Free Recipe
I have found and used dairy-free or lactose free sour cream too, for my husband. I will say that the latter is most like “normal” and you cannot tell the difference at all. This is the only ingredient you would have to swap out which makes it easy peasy if there are dietary restrictions such as this one in your home.
How to Make Chocolate Cake with Pudding

- Add sour cream, eggs, vegetable oil, and water.
- Once smooth pour the cake batter into your prepared bundt cake pan.
- Bake for approximately 50-55 minutes or until toothpick comes out with moist crumbs attached
- Carefully remove pan from your oven and let cool in the pan on a cooling rack before turning out on a plate.
- Cool to room temperature before frosting and decorating.
Let’s talk about mixing and matching for a minute here because you WILL want to try another after this. As far as the water you can really use any sort of liquid. Use cream soda with white chocolate flavor cake mix. At Christmas time we did just that with our Egg Nog Pudding Cake and OMG it changed the whole flavor profile. With that said, think outside of the box. Go with lemon cake mix next maybe!
If you didn’t have a box of dry pudding mix from Jello then yes you could add the same ounces of ready made vanilla pudding cups that are shelf stable and already made into the batter instead. A great way of doctoring cake mix to taste like it came from a bakery.
I have done both and I will say there isn’t a huge difference in the outcome. If there is a flavor you love but it is only available in instant then just make sure you add the number of ounces necessary in the recipe you are following and you should be good to go.
Yes, you will want to do that to preserve the texture and keep it fresh with the dairy products inside. It will firm up a bit but could be warmed again to become extra tender in the microwave in 20 seconds or so.
