Upside down cherry pie is what we call it, but it’s delicious whatever you call it! NO pie crust necessary on the bottom, just pour over pie crust batter right over the top and bake. Super easy cherry pie filling dessert.

So I had a can of cherry pie filling in the pantry and figured I could come up with something yummy using it, that’s how this upside down cherry pie came about. It’s a fun cherry filling dessert that surprises you because you put the cherries on top, but after baking they end up on the bottom. It is sweet enough all by itself or top with vanilla ice cream for a sweeter treat. It is really good! 😉 (affiliate links present)

Upside Down Pie Recipe Easy

You may have made our Pineapple Upside Down Cake with Yellow Cake Mix because that is “normal”, but you can use so many other type of fruits. That’s what I decided to call it anyway because when you serve it the cherries end up on the bottom and it has a sort of cake like consistency on top.

Slap it in a pie dish and we’ll just call it an upside down cherry pie shall we. lol. That’s just how I roll…”let’s just figure it out using what we already have in the cupboards shall we” kinda’ gal. 😉 I found this basic recipe and adapted it from there according to what I had on hand.

A hand holds a can of Signature Select light cherry pie filling or topping, perfect for adding a fruity twist to your cherry brownies. The label showcases cherries tantalizingly perched on a cheesecake, while shelves stocked with various grocery items create a vibrant backdrop.

The batter went on the bottom (spray it first), then after boiling the cherry pie filling mixture for a bit on the stovetop I poured that on top.

I was surprised when it was baking that the cherries fell to the bottom but it came out really nicely with a bit of the filling peeking thru with a light brown color. No frosting needed (but I did add some to try it out, either way is good) Here’s the recipe.

Ingredients

  1. All purpose flour
  2. Sugar
  3. Milk
  4. Vanilla
  5. Pie filling

I just melted a tub of frosting that was already made to top it. You can also whip together one tub of marshmallow creme with softened cream cheese. Pipe that over the top like we used in our cherry cheesecake monkey bread and that is great.

I do have a full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post to refer to. Here is a quick step by step of how this is done. I mean so simple you will be sad you didn’t think of this sooner. If you have a holiday coming up or guests coming over it is cheap enough to make a few.

What kind of cherries are best for pies?

In this case canned pie filling is the best one since we are focusing on a very simple, no prep, way to make a dessert. Already sweetened with a thick sauce, this way you can make other fruit versions like blueberry upside down pie, mixed berry, apple, use all the flavors to offer everyone choices. 😉

Serve with a bit of powdered sugar sprinkled over the top, with ice cream on top or and a bit of water with confectioners sugar until desired consistency to create a glaze/frosting to pour on top.

How to glaze an upside down cherry cake?

All I do is whisk together powdered sugar with a bit of milk until it is as thick as you’d like it to be. You could microwave a tub of vanilla frosting too and drizzle that over the top to add sweetness too if you’d like.

How do you make an upside down cake?

You can follow the same idea we did here with a pie upside down but with cake mix. Mix batter as directed on the back of the box. Pour can of pie filling on the bottom of your baking dish with batter over the top. Bake as directed so when served the fruit filling is on the bottom and baked in to a delicious bite.

How to Bake a Cherry Pie Upside Down

  • Mix your ingredients together in a bowl and stir. Pour into a greased pie pan, or you can pour over pie crust to get it nicely browned more than on the bottom.
  • Pour cherry mixture into pie pan and bake at 350 for about 36 min. or until it is light brown on top.
  • It will flip over on it’s own with the fruit sinking to the bottom, that is fun!

Can you use different fruit pie fillings?

Yes this is a great cherry pie filling dessert to make that literally took me about 15 min. to prep it and then threw it in the oven to bake. Want to use another fruit though? You totally can. Make our homemade apple pie filling and use that, or a can from the store with this inside instead too!

Perfect to keep on hand when guests come over and you want a warm dessert, and super cheap to make too (but nobody will know that). Looks pretty too. You could easily use apple or blueberry pie filling too and make a bunch of different upside down pie varieties! Let us know how yours turns out!
