Dumplings with sweet potato filling are amazing. If I don’t make them the morning of the actual holiday for breakfast I’ll use leftovers from our Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe with Canned Yams which makes prep that much easier. Filling = done with that! You’ve gotta’ make these. (post may contain affiliate links present)

Sweet Potato Filled Dumplings

I guess you could make these as an easy Canned Biscuit Breakfast Recipe if you didn’t want to make the dough as directed below. That is quite easy though. If you did use ready made you’d still want to roll out into a thin layer so it fits more filling inside. Either way pinching the edges firmly will make sure no leakage occurs.

This is one of the best Thanksgiving Sides ever. I know it is a sweet one but really anything goes then and at Christmas time right? A savory version is called Palt but either way, delicious. Don’t get on your kids for eating a nutritious and balanced meal at that time, it is time to focus on just catching up with family and friends then, period.

Potato Dumplings

You may have had pierogies before, and yes those are so delicious but more on the savory side of things. This is the same technique with a filled dough full of smooth potatoes but we are going sweet sweet like a dessert.

Now let’s talk about the star ingredient cooking it it in a multitude of ways shall we? From baked in the oven, pressure cooker or air fryer we have a few choices to start with. You’ll want to get this done first, remove the skin and allow it to cool a bit.

How to cook sweet potatoes to mash

  1. You can remove the skin first, so that is done, dice and cook Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes Cubed if you like. This way is great because it’s fast, and all you have to do it mash once fork tender.
  2. Sweet Potato in the Air Fryer is the way we have described to you in the recipe card below since that is how we typically do it.
  3. For the old fashioned way, this is How Long to Bake a Sweet Potato at 400 until you can stick a knife into the center and it slides right out easily.
  4. Pressure Cooker Sweet Potatoes are quick too. You can use any cooker with high pressure to make these.

Once the middle is tender and cooled a bit you are ready to proceed. You could make the night before, refrigerate and make the center the next day too for easier prep.

Potato Dumplings

Homemade Dumpling Dough Ingredients

  • 1 c all purpose flour is the base
  • 1/3 c buttermilk is richer than milk
  • Water and sugar gives it a bit of sweetness
  • 1/4 tsp salt just a tad
  • Olive oil, use the good stuff

Dumpling Filling

Then you would need 1 tbsp brown sugar, some sugar and cinnamon for filling to combine with 2 sweet potatoes cooked until insides are tender, peeled mashed smooth. Raisins or dried cranberries are other add ins you could include.

With crescent rolls

You could roll dough of crescent rolls alternatively too for the dough. Many times if I am going to go thru the effort of baking from scratch I will make a few extras. Mash, save in the fridge so the next day I can use that to make a batch of Sweet Potato Muffin Recipe for breakfast in the morning too!

How to Make Sweet Potato Dumplings in Oven

  • Mix all-purpose flour, water, buttermilk, salt and sugar (2 tbsp) in a bowl. Start mixing everything with a spoon, pour in olive oil now. If the dough is too liquid, add a little more flour. Knead soft but not sticky dough. Put it in a bowl and cover with cling film for 15 minutes.
    • For quick cooking, air fry the sweet potato (washed, dried, skin pierced with a knife or fork) at 360 F for 25 minutes or until tender inside.
  • Peel the sweet potato, cut into pieces, add 1 tbsp brown sugar to it. Then mash thoroughly with a fork to get a puree.
  • Cut the dough into two parts. Put one part under cling film so that it does not dry out. Cut the rest into 6-7 pieces.
  • Roll each piece of dough into a thin 2-2 1/2-inch diameter sheet. Place 1 tbsp sweet potato filling in the center of the sheet.
  • Leave some space around the edges so you can pinch them.
  • Pinch the edges and put dumplings in a glass baking dish. Prepare the remaining half of the dough with filling too. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Make a sweet sauce with heat over medium heat using butter melted and the sugar, cinnamon and water. (a splash of vanilla extract is nice too) Stirring occasionally untir so sugars dissolve.
  • Pour the sauce into a baking dish and cover with foil, put in the oven and bake for 15 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes or until lightly golden brown. Serve this easy dessert with the remaining sauce and vanilla ice cream over the top.

Sweet Potato Dumplings in Air Fryer

These are baked in the oven but if you did want a bit crispy in a saucepan you’d combine sauce ingredients and saute instead. You can also make air fryer dumplings but really I like the outside to be super moist and kinda’ wet with this sauce. Either way the prep is the same and you are going to need;

Dessert Dumplings

Can you freeze dumplings?

Yes you could freeze the leftovers. You would want to keep as much sauce as possible and store together in a closed container. This is how to cook frozen dumplings when you want to enjoy again.

Potstickers vs Dumplings

The two are very similar though one typically has meat inside and the other is typically sweet like apple dumplings or this one. Made in a similar fashion with a dough on the outside filled with a filling and pressed closed like an empenada.

What are sweet potato dumplings made of?

Obviously you will want fresh or make as a leftover sweet potato dumplings recipe after Christmas! Mashed so they are smooth you then will need to make the dough to wrap around it made of;
1. Flour
2. Buttermilk
3. Water
4. Salt
5. Sugar
6. Oil

Why are my dumplings falling apart?

You want a really smooth dough to wrap around your potato filling, and sealed well. Use a fork to seal all the way across so there are no openings or weak spots where the cooking liquid can get inside and make them fall apart.
