How Long to Cook Chicken Wings

There are many ways you can make this favorite finger food. The cook time varies as to which you choose, and whether or not they are fresh or right out of the freezer. Baked frozen chicken wings take the longest but still turn out terrific. If yours are still rock hard you’d want to follow those directions and timing.

For this one to turn out perfectly you want them to be either fresh from the butcher or defrosted. We did share this post on how to thaw chicken in microwave if you need that info. first. Once that is set and you’re good to go I’d take out all the ingredients so you can make an assembly line.

There are two options for this, you can wrap each piece in bacon or leave as is. If you could only find whole chicken wings you would want to cut into the 3 separate pieces. You’ll get the tip which should be discarded. Wingettes and drumettes will be cooked.

Most of the time in the US these are usually already cut apart. You can find the two together in trays in the meat section of your grocery store or frozen bagged. Easiest way to defrost is to just leave the bag in your fridge overnight. Never leave poultry on the countertop as bacteria growth will cause sickness.

Of course you can increase the temperature higher to get these done faster, but there is a difference. Lower and a bit slower will create more tender meat inside. You can then increase the temp. at the end, or set to broil in order to crisp the skin. Your choice but this is our preference.

Bacon Wrapped Chicken Wings

Bacon Wrapped Chicken Wings

These remind me a bit of our brown sugar smokies. Using the same pan to contain all that wonderful sauce so it soaks and bakes right in, both are a great duo served together for ultimate YUM. Adding this step is a bit more tedious as you want to cut each piece of pork, wrap each one individually and lay inside the pan.

I’m not going to lie, this is a bit messy….but so worth it. If you spray the inside of your pan with olive oil spray and/or lay down some nonstick aluminum foil it will help in the clean up process for sure.

  • Rinse wings, dry with paper towels well so skin will soak up sauce and get crispy at the end.
  • If you want to wrap with bacon strips (smoked or unsmoked) cut each piece of pork into thirds. Wrap a piece of a wing in each part and set inside baking dish.
  • Grease a baking dish with oil or cover with non stick foil. Arrange in the dish so they aren’t overlapping. Spread the sauce over the wings, making sure each is covered.
  • Place in a preheated oven set oven temperature to 375 degrees F and bake about 35 – 40 minutes or until meat is done. Use instant read thermometer to ensure they reach a minimum of 165 F.

To make crispy chicken wings in oven you’ll want to change setting to broil and brown top for a few minutes to get crispy skin.

Baked Whole Chicken Wings

If you choose not to separate the 3 parts of the wing that is okay too but you’d need to increase the baking time by 5-10 minutes. You’ll want a rimmed baking sheet or casserole dish so the sauce is contained. Wings on a baking sheet are fine if you are just going to brush on some and not a lot.

Want to make these for game day and triple this wing recipe?? Go right ahead! Use a larger sheet but don’t overlap them, that is key. If you have to use more than one shelf in your oven the bottom one won’t get as crisp so it may need a few extra minutes at the end.

If you have company coming over you might want a variety of choices. Our baking powder chicken wings with just salt and pepper on the outside are the crispiest by far. You can make them baked or in your air fryer.

Baked BBQ Chicken Wings

If you want to make your own homemade barbecue sauce you certainly can. This is a great mixture in case you are opposed to bottled. We use this on our oven baked chicken breasts as well at the end, turns out great.

  • 4 tbsp maple syrup
  • 6 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika and granulated garlic
  • 2 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • salt, black pepper to taste
    • some chili powder can be added for heat

Once these are cooked and reached 165 F you can add a bit more sauce on top which will caramelize and bake right on which is great. Ready to jump to recipe and get started?? Us too, I mean after writing all this I think we need to make these babies again. 😉

This isn’t just great with bbq though. You can easily use the same directions to make teriyaki wings another night, or alongside these for more choices.
