Our salisbury steak in oven recipe with gravy is like our baked hamburger patties but simmered in a rich sauce. It is an Old Fashioned family favorite dinner served over mashed potatoes that is cheap and delicious.

Salisbury steaks simmered in with onions, mushrooms, and gravy, is best paired with mashed potatoes or green beans for dinner. You can whip this meal together in 15 minutes with hamburger patties store bought, frozen or homemade.

I am always looking for comfort foods, especially in the Winter time when it is chilly outside and this one is so easy to prep. I’ve made it homemade but also have tips on cutting corners but still making it delicious.

As far as the seasonings go that is always subjective so you can mix and match but traditionally this just uses light salt and pepper to enhance the beefy flavor. It is faster than how long to cook meatloaf because it is broken up into patties. You can make your own or buy packaged rounds, I prefer seasoning myself.

You could use a mixture of sausage and beef for the ground beef patties. I will do this sometimes with 1 pound of spicy Jimmy Dean sausage and 2 pounds of lean ground beef. If you like a bit of heat I highly suggest this option. If I do I won’t add any seasonings at all. If you need dairy free gravy you can use a plant based butter alternative. Arrowroot is gluten free and a substitute to flour.

Can you make salisbury steak with hamburger patties?

For sure you can, that is a great hack if you are running short on time. Just separate them, lay inside the dish and then make your Mushroom Gravy to pour on top. I will say I have done both and because they simmer in the sauce you can’t really tell the difference between this and homemade patties.

Salisbury Steak with Frozen Hamburger Patties

You could make this with Frozen Burgers in the Oven however the sauce will not be as thick. As the meat defrosts and starts to cook there will be water released at that time. You won’t be able to season the patties either, but other than that it will work.

How Long to Cook Salisbury Steak in the Oven

No need to cook ground beef in oven first, the patties will cook in the sauce. Just note that they will begin to fall apart when baked for 30 minutes until super tender. They should cut easily with the side of a fork without any pink in the center when done.

How do you know when it is done?

Your best bet is to use a meat thermometer to test the middle, thickest part, of the patty to ensure it reaches 160F – 165 degrees. At this point it will have reached fall-apart status, super tender, which is what you want for this dish.

How to Thicken the Gravy

I do add a bit of all purpose flour when making the gravy itself but if at the end you want it even thicker, pour the sauce into a pan over medium high heat. In a dish whisk together 1 tbsp cornstarch with 3 tbsp cold water until smooth. Once bubbling stir this roux in and stir. Remember it will get thicker as it cools too though.

FAQ

What is another name for salisbury steak?

Some people call this hamburger steak, for obvious reasons. If you see it called this on a menu, or from a friend, they are referring to this Old Fashioned dish made with homemade or store bought hamburger patties cooked in an onion gravy.

Do you have to brown hamburger patties to make salisbury steak in the oven?

You can but it is not necessary. This dish is meant to be super tender and to kinda’ fall apart when served so it isn’t necessary to brown the patty first but you could do so for a few minutes on each side if you preferred a bit of added texture.

Can you use bottled gravy?

You could but you would want to thin it out just a bit with a bit of water so it coats every patty well. I think it is easy enough to make gravy homemade so I typically do that instead but store bought gravy is an option.

What is the best temperature to bake salisbury steak?

You want a bit higher temp so the meat really bubbles and soaks in the flavors of the gravy it is cooking in. I feel like 400 degrees F is ideal to achieve the optimal super tender texture. You can remove the foil the last 5 minutes if you want to brown the top just a bit before serving too.

What is the classic way to serve salisbury steak?

Serving over a bed of mashed potatoes is the Old Fashioned classic way to serve this dish. With the cooked patty on top drenched with gravy, onions and mushrooms you can then scoop up a bit of everything in each bite!

What to Make with Leftovers

Most of the time I will make Shepherd’s Pie with Ground Beef which is total comfort food the next day. Its an easy 30 minute dish we love. Both have similar flavors with a sort of sauce to them so you really can’t go wrong. Chopped up and reheated pver rice is an easy choice too.
