S’mores in the Oven

Who came up with smores? The origin of s’mores, a beloved campfire treat, is a bit unclear, but they have a long history in American outdoor cooking. The word is a contraction of “some more,” suggesting that people often wanted another serving after tasting one. Nowadays we think outside of the box, from S’mores In a Jar to these!

One of the earliest recorded recipes resembling this 3 ingredient dessert appeared in a 1927 publication called Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. The recipe was titled Some Mores and instructed readers to – toast two marshmallows over the coals to a crisp gooey state and then put them inside a graham cracker and chocolate bar sandwich.

Doing it this way can now be a great idea for slumber parties! NO need to worry about anybody burning themselves but you can enjoy the same outcome with the same ingredients. I mean you can’t sway from what everyone expects. Even if you think outside of the box like our Smores Poke Cake you have to have all 3 or it’s just not right…..

How to Make Smores in the Oven

First off these are always messy so have wet towelettes and/or baby wipes handy for all the fingers that will be handling this quick easy dessert recipe. I will go over a few variations of these if you want to try something above and beyond Hershey’s chocolate bars, jumbo sized marshmallows and grahams.

  • Preheat broiler on high. OR preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
    • You can line baking sheet with parchment paper for easier clean up if you like.
  • Lay 12 grahams that have been broken in half down on a sheet pan.
  • Top each half with half a bar of chocolate with 1 large marshmallow on top of that with the flat side facing up.
  • Slide into the oven with the light on so you can watch this process as it will occur very fast.
  • Once the top of the marshmallow gets dark golden brown take it out.
    • You want it to start to smoke a bit on top so that the middle of it will be soft as well before taking out, this will take about 30 seconds.
    • Or preheat to 350 degrees F and heat for 3-5 minutes until browned and chocolate is melting.
  • Immediately place second half of graham cracker on top of each piece of marshmallows and chocolate one.

Carefully lift each one off and serve on top of a napkin. Having wet wipes handy is helpful because these can be sticky when enjoyed.

How to Make Smores Without a Fire

Below we arae explaining how to do this fun treat in the oven, baked to a golden brown and ooey gooey. Another method would be to make it as a microwave recipe which is fun too. If you have really little ones I would suggest this as they can look thru the window and watch as the marshmallow doubles in size, puffs up big and is ready in just seconds.

How to Make Smores in the Microwave

SMores Ingredients

  • Graham cracker halves – just break in half – or use fruit to make Banana S’mores
  • Large Marshmallows – mini marshmallows can be messier
  • Chocolate bars (milk chocolate or dark chocolate squares can be used too)
    • milk chocolate chips or white chocolate versions will work but can be messier

Place a graham cracker on a microwave-safe plate in a single layer. Add a piece of chocolate on top. (some love a smear of peanut butter too) Put a marshmallow on top of that and you are ready to heat. Microwave the assembled s’more for about 10-15 seconds. Keep a close eye on it, as marshmallows can expand quickly, and you don’t want them to overflow.

Carefully remove the plate. Top the marshmallow with another graham cracker to create a sandwich. Let this cool for a moment to avoid burning your mouth, then serve and enjoy.

We have a printable recipe card below but first you may want to go above and beyond the traditional bites. Think of these substitutions or add ins sometime and see which you love best;

What can you use besides graham crackers for s mores?

Substitute graham crackers with chocolate chip cookies for a sweeter and even more indulgent s’more. The combination of warm, gooey marshmallow and chocolate between two cookies is delightful. Ritz crackers offer a buttery and slightly salty contrast to the sweetness of marshmallows and Ghirardelli chocolate squares.

What else can you put inside Smores?

Try using or adding a mini peanut butter cup instead of plain chocolate. Use Chips Ahoy cookies instead of grahams. Adding a smear of Nutella or peanut butter inside is delicious, or use stuffed marshmallows for added YUM.
