Easy scalloped apples baked in oven is a sweet fruit dessert or holiday side dish. With cinnamon and sugar this apple casserole hit made as Instant Pot apple crisp or now made in a 9×13″ dish. Top with ice cream or enjoy warm as is as a family favorite treat.
Apples scalloped with a graham cracker crumble on top is to die for. Served for dessert is fun but I have been known to enjoy a bowl full for breakfast too. 😉 Tender with a simple sugar glaze with Granny Smith apples is slightly tart and sweet together. (affiliate links present)
Easy Scalloped Apples
You are going to prep these similar to our Fried Air Fryer Apples which is peeled to start, removing the core and then sliced medium thickness. The thinner they are the faster they will bake and may soften a bit too much. You don’t want it to become applesauce y’all.
This was made after we made Apple Spice Dump Cake with cake mix, but wanted something more from scratch. Yes pie filling is handy in a snap but is already quite soft and if you like a bit more texture and homemade style this is the answer.
Baked Scalloped Apples
This time we skipped the crust entirely and just used a sort of brown sugar crumble over the top. I mean Apple Cobbler with Bisquick is a bit heartier with a sort of batter over the top, and more like cake. This is more similar to a baked apple cobbler with the fresh fruit being the star ingredient.
The best part of this is that you could integrate other things in there too. I have added some raisins or dried cranberries which work well. During the summer months I will eliminate 1 apple and instead make a batch of Apple Rhubarb Crunch with this old fashioned veggie sliced into the mix!! For the basic mix you’ll need;
- Granny smith apples peeled and sliced thin
- 1/2 c sugar
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- 2 tbsp all purpose flour
- Lemon juice
- 1/4 c butter unsalted, cut into pats
Brown sugar, butter and crushed grahams will create a sort of Graham Cracker Crust for Apple Pie but sprinkled over the top instead of on the bottom.
Baked Apple Casserole
Baked Apples with Brown Sugar works too if you’d rather have a deeper sweet with that tinge of molasses mixed in there, or a combination of both. Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9×13 inch casserole dish and set it aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the peeled, cored and thinly sliced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, all-purpose flour, and lemon juice. Toss the apple slices until they are well coated with the sugar and spices.
- Transfer the Apple Slices Recipe mixture into the prepared casserole dish and spread it out evenly. Sprinkle the cubed unsalted butter evenly over the top of the apple mixture.
- In a separate bowl, prepare the graham cracker topping. Crush the graham crackers until you have fine crumbs, and then mix them with melted butter, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Stir until the mixture resembles wet sand.
- Evenly distribute the graham cracker topping over the apple mixture in the casserole dish, covering it completely. Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil, and place it in the preheated oven.
- Bake for 30 minutes covered, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes or until the topping is golden brown, and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. You can do this kinda’ similar on the stove by following our Cast Iron Apple Crisp with Oats instructions too. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
How to reheat leftover apple crisp
Regardless of the method you choose, keep in mind that the reheated apple crisp may not have the same level of crispiness as when it was freshly baked. However, it will still be delicious, and the flavors will be just as delightful.
- Microwave – Place a portion in a microwave-safe dish. Heat on medium power (50%) for 1-2 minutes. Check the temperature, and if it’s not hot enough, continue heating in 30-second increments.
- Stovetop Method – If you want to reheat a larger portion or the entire dish, you can use the stovetop. Transfer to a saucepan or skillet. Heat it over low to medium-low heat, stirring gently and occasionally to prevent sticking or burning for about 10-15 minutes.
We have made and heated again baked apples in air fryer which is a great option if you want to crisp up the top once again for texture.
Cinnamon Apples in Oven
If you are looking to serve this with another savory dish that is made similarly sliced, try our potato tart. OH so pretty and another great side that pairs well with all holiday dishes.
