What are the best peaches for pies?
White or yellow makes no difference if you ask me. If you want to remove the peels you’d want to quick blanch them but that’s not necessary. I’ve made Hand Pies with Puff Pastry this way too. That is bought frozen, defrosted and rolled out this same way. The texture is just poofier than a traditional crust and another great choice as far as the outside goes.
If you wanted to use a roll of crescent rolls you could do so instead. With those you just have to press the perforations together so there’s no leaking. Or for sweeter make canned Cinnamon Roll Peach Cobbler.
Are hand pies the same as empanadas?
Basically, except the dough is thinner with these. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Prep a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Remove the pie crust from the fridge to thaw to room temperature. If using a can of pie filling you can skip making your own and skip to the egg wash step.
- In a saucepan, add the peaches and butter. Warm on medium heat until the peaches begin to soften and release juices. Add in the brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice and salt. Mix together until combined and the peaches are soft.
- Cook for about 10-15 minutes.
- Use a fork to mash any large chunks left of the peaches, leaving some consistency of peach chunks throughout the juicy mixture. To thicken this sauce, add the cornstarch. Stir together until combined and then remove from the heat.
- Let peach hand pies sit for a couple minutes to cool and thicken. On a clean and floured surface, roll out the pie crust dough. Use a large circular cookie cutter (3.5 inch) to cut out circles in the pie dough.
- Repeat with the second dough slab in the package. Take any scraps and reroll into a dough ball and roll out to cut out more circles.
- Place these circles on the baking sheet. Fill the center of each circle with a large tablespoon of peach filling. Use egg wash to baste around the edges of the dough. Place another circle piece of dough on top of the filling and use a fork to seal the edges.
- Place 4 slits in the center of the hand pie. Brush each with egg wash and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and sanding sugar too if you like.
Peach Hand Pie
Bake in the oven for 15 minutes until golden brown. While those bake, make the glaze in a separate bowl. Add 1 cup powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp vanilla and 1 tbsp milk all at once.
Whisk together until combined and a smooth glaze is formed. Remove the hand pies from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Drizzle the glaze over each hand pie. Enjoy!
How long do you cook pies in the air fryer?
For air fryer hand pies instead our Air Fryer Turnovers steps are basically the same. Keep in mind that this will only bake a few at a time so if you are feeding a crowd I would choose the oven instead. Or you can prep many of them and set on a parchment lined baking sheet to cook in batches.
- Preheat air fryer to 350 degrees for 5 minutes
- Follow instructions as described above
- Press the edges closed for sure so fresh peach juices don’t seep out and make a mess
- Spray basket with non stick spray or you can place a small piece of parchment paper inside
- Set inside without overlapping
- Brush the tops with your egg wash in a small bowl and sanding or granulated sugar for added sweet
- Air fry for 10-12 minutes or until they are golden brown on the top
Then you should let them rest for 10 minutes so the insides aren’t as hot. If you bite into them right away you’re likely to burn your mouth so be careful. Love this one and want to try another one with a bit less prep work? I get it. Our fave quick throw together in less than 30 minutes is our Peach Cobbler with Cake Mix recipe here!
You use similar ingredients but there isn’t any cutting or cooking beforehand required like our hand pies recipe here. Same basic flavors but easier overall to make. I like having a few options using the same main ingredients or fruit to make when we have unexpected guests show up.
How do you reheat hand pies?
When you’re ready to enjoy the leftover peach hand pies, remove them from the freezer and let them thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat them in a preheated oven at around 350° F for about 10-15 minutes or until they are heated through and crisp. Once reheated, your leftover hand pies should taste almost as good as when they were freshly baked.
Before storing, allow the hand pies to cool completely. This prevents condensation inside the storage container, which can make the pies soggy.
– Wrap each hand pie individually with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This helps prevent them from sticking together and preserves their freshness.
– Place the individually wrapped pieces in an airtight container. Alternatively, you can use a resealable plastic bag. Press out as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn.
– If you plan to store for an extended period, it’s a good idea to label the container or bag with the date. This way, you can keep track of their freshness.
– Store the wrapped and sealed pies in the freezer. They can be stored for up to 2-3 months in the freezer without a significant loss of quality.
How do you reheat frozen hand pies?
Start by preheating your oven to around 350°F. This temperature allows the peach hand pies to heat evenly without burning. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent them from sticking.
Arrange on the prepared baking sheet. Leave some space between them to ensure even heating. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 15-20 minutes or until the hand pies are heated through
