How to cook ham steak in the oven with a mustard glaze. Great for breakfast or small batch ham steaks for an easy holiday dinner. If you make T Bone Steak in Oven often throughout the year this is great for Easter and Christmas time.
Baked ham steaks are simple, hands down one of the easiest meals we tend to make once a month at least. Use the same method and the best way to reheat leftover ham slices too so they don’t dry out too. (affiliate links present)
Baked Ham Steak in Oven
Ok so if there are only a few of you for the holidays or you are really getting a craving for slices of pork, this is super easy to do. Use one pan for these and another to make baked cabbage steaks and you have yourself a complete meal with protein and vegetables.
Heck, we have even wanted to make our Leftover Ham Recipe but didn’t want to buy an entire spiral and this was how we did it. In the morning with eggs or for a meal with this mustard glaze it is a tasty one pan dinner that is super cheap too.

How Long to Cook Ham Steak in Oven
The timing will depend on the size and thickness of course. Typically if you buy them in a package already sliced they are about 1/4″ thick and will take 30 minutes to warm and get a bit of golden brown on the outside. If you just want to warm and not brown at all you’re looking at 20 min or so. When slicing leftover Coca Cola Ham with Glaze try to make this size too.
What temperature should you heat up a precooked ham steak?
350 degrees F is best. With something like Pork Steaks in the Oven that are more similar to sirloin cuts it will take about the same timing or else they will dry out. The biggest thing to remember as they get thicker is to rest a decent amount of time or the moisture leaks out when you slice it open.
Can you cook a ham steak from frozen?
You could but it isn’t ideal. If you can’t defrost first you can follow these same instructions except cover the top with foil tightly so they can steam for the first 20 minutes. Check and ensure they are warmed in the center, if not add another 5 minutes covered. Then continue on uncovered for the last 10 minutes as directed
How do you thaw from ham steaks?
If you start with frozen ham steak, it is best to thaw it completely in the refrigerator for best results. This will likely take overnight ideally. You can also sit them in a sealed bag inside a bowl of cool water in the sink for 30 minutes.
Pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture from the outside. You can season with your preferred spices or glaze. Common seasonings include brown sugar, honey, mustard, cloves, or pineapple juice. Apply the seasonings or glaze evenly over the surface.
Ham Steaks in Oven
These are essentially thick slices of pork that are cut from a larger butt. Most of the time I, and others, will buy it packaged and vacuum sealed in individual packages. Most of the time it will hold 2-4 slices so it is great for smaller meal prep. If you made Crockpot Ham Recipe with Pineapple for the holidays you could slice and package in freezer bags to heat later on this way.
You can enjoy a grilled ham steaks dinner if you like more of a char on the outside, pan-fried over medium heat, air fryer ham or broiled too. Typically sold boneless and pre-cooked, they don’t need a lot of time since you are just warming it up. We like a buttery sauce over the top to add flavor, we used;
- Butter
- 2 tbsp dijon mustard
- Brown sugar
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- Worcestershire sauce
If you have a sauce that you love on top of this dish then by all means mix that up. Just a light brush of mustard and honey mixed together is an easy option too. Or use something like this homemade glaze.
Glazed Ham Steak Recipe
If you have leftover Spiral Ham in the Oven those pieces will likely be rather thin so decrease the timing. Place your ham steaks on a large baking sheet. Use non stick foil or parchment underneath so they don’t stick and it is easier to clean up too.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Melt the butter in a microwave safe dish for approximately 15 seconds.
- Stir in the dijon, brown sugar, maple syrup and worcestershire sauce until you have a smooth glaze. Spread half of the glaze on both steaks.
- Bake for approximately 20 minutes cook time.
- Remove and spread on the remaining glaze.
Continue to cook for another 10-15 minutes until you get a light browning on the top. If you just wanted to warm it you could take it out after the initial 20 minutes and the sauce isn’t necessary but recommended by my family. You can make Sausage Patties in Oven for breakfast the next day too, another win.
Yes, ham steak is pre-cooked (typically) or smoked before it is sold. This means that it is safe to eat without further cooking, as it is fully cooked during the curing and smoking process. However, you may choose to heat it through before serving to enhance its flavor and texture like we explain here.
Yes, it is in fact just slices from the whole thing sold for those who just want a few slices of ham. Ideal for individual servings or just a couple to enjoy during the holidays, we will explain how to cook ham steaks in the oven here with a glaze.
