We have talked to you about How Long to Bake Potatoes at 375 before, but what if you don’t want the whole thing? Crispy crunchy finger foods are way more fun for kids to eat during dinnertime right? And fun just tastes better too right? If you’re a parent you are nodding your head with me.

You don’t have to use russets though those are most common. Baked Red Potatoes fries or slices are fun too. A very slight change in cook time depending on the variety you choose but a simple way to change things up, sweet potatoes are delicious too!

Whether you bake them as we explain here or make Sweet Potato Chips Air Fryer style you can use any variety you want. The biggest tip to remember is to slice them all the same thickness. Thinner will be crispier and won’t take as long.

  • 4 russet potatoes sliced 1/4″ thick
  • Garlic powder
  • 1/8 tsp celery salt
  • Paprika or Italian seasoning
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 4 tbsp olive oil

Making baked potato slices is the perfect side dish, easy to make. You can enjoy as is or use in recipes such as a gratin, scalloped dish, Potato Tart or homemade chips. Here’s how to slice potatoes: First select the variety you want, all are suitable for slicing. The best though are Yukon Gold, Russet, or red potatoes.

Best Way to Make Baked Potatoes in the oven is to make sure to rinse first and use a vegetable brush to scrub the dirt off, we don’t want to eat that. Don’t forget to dry the outsides with a clean kitchen or paper towels. Place a damp kitchen towel or a non-slip mat under your cutting board to prevent it from sliding.

If desired, peel the skins using a vegetable peeler. I prefer to leave them on so they stay in tact better and it is the healthiest part too. Peeling is a matter of personal preference and the requirements of your recipe. Trim a small slice off both ends using a sharp knife. This will create a flat surface and stabilize the potato while you’re slicing.

With one of the trimmed ends facing down use a sharp knife to slice into even and equal thicknesses. Aim for 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick for most recipes. For even thinner and more uniform slices, you can use a mandoline.

No matter how you cut them, always pay close attention to your fingers and keep them tucked away from the blade while slicing. Use a claw grip with your non-dominant hand to hold the potato securely while slicing with your dominant hand. Once sliced, use immediately in your recipe or store them in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.

  • Preheat oven to 400 F. Slice potatoes into 1/4″ rounds, pat dry with paper towels and place into a large resealable plastic bag. Set aside.
  • Combine garlic powder, celery seed, paprika, salt, pepper and cayenne and mix well.
  • Sprinkle on top of potatoes in the bag and shake the bag well to coat the outsides.
  • Lay the potatoes in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with non stick aluminum foil, parchment paper or sprayed with non stick spray so they don’t stick.
  • Drizzle tops with olive oil.
  • Flip over each potato slice. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until the outside is crispy and the inside is soft.

If you were making baked sweet potato slices you might want to change the herbs to cinnamon and sugar instead. Cut into sweet potato fries you might want to check at 30 minutes since they aren’t as large. You can add diced yellow onions to all of them like we did with our Fried Potatoes with Onions.

If you want to melt cheese on top, flip over after 35 minutes, sprinkle shredded cheese on top and bake remaining 5-10 minutes until melted and crispy. You can throw in How to Cook Tri Tip in Oven at this time for a great duo. Immediately loosen from baking sheet with a spatula.
