Below we will explain the salisbury steak on stovetop method but along the way I will explain the others. Each has their pros and cons, but all delicious with the same or very similar ingredients. If you have your own favorite meatloaf with onion soup mix mixture you can certainly use that as the base. (affiliate links present)

Easy Salisbury Steak Recipe on Stove with Gravy

Cooking salisbury steak on the stove is a real winner. You can bubble it for as long as you like, the more time the more tender it will get. This is very similar to our slow cooker chopped steak recipe. The names are synonymous really so don’t let the verbiage fool you. If you love low and slow, throw it in before work then go for these instructions.

For this dish in particular in a Crockpot works quite well so the meat can really soak up all the flavors of that thick mushroom meatloaf gravy (essentially that is what it is). You could certainly half petite potatoes and throw some of those in there too with any of these methods for a complete meal.

How to Make Salisbury Steak Recipe with Onion Soup Mix

If you wanted to use a packet of homemade Lipton onion soup mix I would leave out the fresh onions and Worcestershire sauce. Either way this is magic when it comes to adding it to hamburger meat. All you really need really to add a ton of flavor in one dump.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef 80/20 is best or mix ground sausage with beef
  • 1 c mushrooms chopped or sliced, portabella are best
  • All purpose flour will thicken the sauce
  • Panko breadcrumbs works as a binder for the patties
  • Egg is best added when at room temperature
  • Onion chopped is optional
  • Beef broth is better than water for the gravy
  • Butter or dairy free alternative works
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Mustard to add a zing
  • Salt and pepper for seasonings
  • 1/2 tsp granulated garlic is great too

Can You Cook Hamburger Steak in Oven?

You could brown on the stove and then transfer to the oven if you wanted to, in a cast iron skillet which is oven safe. I would set to 400 until meat is to temp and sauce thickens to your liking.

As for the seasonings you really should add to taste. Prefer onion powder over garlic then by all means use that instead. Start what is listed in the recipe card and adjust from there according to your tastebuds. Use the same ingredients but different timing to make our Instant Pot Salisbury Steak Recipe version.

Skillet Salisbury Steak

We have tips on how to cook round steak on the stove too if you want to make other cuts for dinner. This uses ground meat which could be beef, turkey or even sausage if that is what you prefer. I do like those with a bit of fat in them vs. venison which is super duper lean and more dry.

How do you make Salisbury steak patties?

Put the lean ground beef in a deep bowl, add the egg, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and 5 tablespoons of beef broth. Mix thoroughly. Now add panko, as well as salt and spices. Should form a meatloaf texture that can be formed into oval patties, may need more breadcrumbs to get to this texture. Then form into uniform medium size rounds.

How long to cook Salisbury steak on stove with gravy

  • In your large skillet add 1 tbsp of butter or olive oil.
  • Fry the onion and mushrooms for 5-7 minutes to brown over low medium heat. Stir so as not to burn.
  • Add flour and fry for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, over medium heat to create a roux.
  • Pour in the beef broth, stirring, bring to a boil.
  • Break all the lumps of flour. Shape the minced meat into steaks and fry them in another pan in the remaining butter, about 5 minutes per side, to brown the outsides over medium heat.
  • Pour sauce with mushrooms and broth into the meat pan, (or transfer meat patties into mushroom gravy pan. Cover with a lid and cook on low heat for another 20 minutes.

If your sauce gets too thick for your liking, add a splash of broth to thin and serve over mashed potatoes. Of course some may want to add some salt and black pepper to taste at the very end but I think this is perfect as is. Takes about 30 minutes start to finish but tastes like they’re slow cooked.

slow cooker directions

If you want to prep in the morning and let it simmer all day long instead, that is a great option too. We have directions for Crockpot salisbury steak here for you here.

How to Make Homemade Salisbury Steak
How do you know when salisbury steak is done?

The meat will be very very tender. Like so soft you can cut it with the side of your fork. Whether you use cubed steak or hamburger patties this should be the case. If it isn’t it needs more time to cook low and slow until it is.

How do you keep Salisbury steak from falling apart?

You do want to get a good sear on the outsides when you precook the patties first off. This will not only lock in the moisture but keep them from breaking apart in the pan with the gravy as they simmer on the stove.

Can you make salisbury steak with ground turkey?

Yep, if you wanted to make Ground Turkey Patties instead that is quick and easy too, with less fat. Make the same meat mixture but with this raw protein instead of hamburger patties basically. Same goes for creating the rich brown gravy made in your skillet over medium high heat.

If you remember eating this as a tv dinner as a child, this tastes pretty close. I mean WAY better but will still give you the same comfort you remember back in the day. Those always had a veggie in one of the holes which you can create with Fresh Green Beans, and something sweet in the other. Go all out if you want to totally reminisce.

How to save leftovers

As for leftovers, if you have any, they save and reheat quite well. Keep all the sauce that you can as that will keep it moist and help it from drying out when warmed again. Allow to cool completely, then store in a container free from air and in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat with gravy on top in microwave for 1 minute or so.
