What Are Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes are a popular American dish that typically start with a soft hamburger bun. It is then filled with a mixture of ground beef, onions, and tomato type of sauce. The sauce usually includes ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings.

The mixture is cooked until it has a thick and saucy consistency, and it is then spooned onto the bun. The dish is called “sloppy” because it is messy to eat, with the sauce often spilling out of the bun. These messy burgers are often served as a quick and easy lunch or dinner option. They are a classic comfort food in many parts of the United States.

What Meat Can You Use to Make Sloppy Joes

The most common meat used to make Sloppy Joes is lean ground beef. However, you can also use other ground meats such as ground turkey, chicken, or pork as a substitute. Meat free and vegan versions can also be made. Using textured vegetable protein, lentils, or other meat alternatives you’d use the same sauce to make Big Mac Sloppy Joes or traditional varieties.

The meat or meat substitute is usually cooked in a skillet. You can make slow cooker sloppy joes low and slow too. Added in with onions and other vegetables until browned, it is then combined with a tomato sauce. Different seasonings are added to make this saucy ketchup style mixture.
