Ok so you want something unique when baking. A frozen pie crust can be boring and making one from scratch is really easier than you might think. Adding flavor into the mix will add to the overall flavor of your pie so why not do it? (affiliate links present)

Chocolate Pie Crust with Cocoa Powder

Yes a Shortbread Pie Crust is great for a sweet filling but what if you really want a deeper flavor all the way around? Adding this dark powder will amplify the flavor x 10 y’all. An easy way to create a sort of chocolate cookie texture on the bottom of your custard or even use it as the base of an ice cream pie.

How to Make Chocolate Pie Crust No Oreos

You may have done this by crushing the outside of these chocolate cookies, without the cream, into a sand-like texture with a binder and pressing that inside your pan. An Oreo pie crust is okay……..but the texture of this is more like a traditional crust with that flavor you crave. You just need a few ingredients:

Turning a Regular Pie Crust into a Chocolate Pie Crust

Prepare the Dry Ingredients in a large mixing bowl by whisking together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until well combined. Do not use a food processor as your hands, pastry cutter and a spatula is better to get the right texture.

Cut in the Butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.

Add Ice Water one tablespoon at a time, mixing with a fork until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to add too much cold water; the dough should be moist but not sticky.

Form the Dough onto a lightly floured surface and gather it into a ball. Flatten it into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate chocolate pie dough for at least 30 minutes to an hour.

Roll Out the Dough with a rolling pin gently on a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to fit your pie dish. Carefully transfer the rolled dough to the dish, pressing it gently into the bottom and up the sides.

Blind Bake if you are adding a cold filling that doesn’t need to be cooked but you want a baked pie crust to start with you will want to line the pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil before laying inside and fill it with pie weights or dried beans. This will ensure that it doesn’t puff up.

Chocolate Pie Crust Filling Ideas

What is a chocolate pie crust made of?

  • All purpose flour will create the dough
  • 7 tbsp cocoa powder
  • Sugar is needed since the powder is not sweet at all
  • Salt, just a pinch will make the chocolate flavor more intense
  • Butter must be cold and shaved or cubed into small pieces
  • 5 tbsp water needs to be ice cold for best results

Can you make chocolate pie crust with Bisquick?

You could make a version of our Bisquick Pie Crust this way but you would still want to include the sugar and cocoa listed here to transition it to sweet. A great way to cheat a bit or make if you run out of flour.

Can you make chocolate pie crust dairy free?

You could make this a Dairy Free Pie Crust with vegan plant based butter product if need be. Country Crock has a great product that we buy often for my husband to enjoy. When baking it works just as well. I like to freeze the sticks so they shave well on a cheese grater as they are softer than “traditional sticks”.

Can you make homemade pie crust ahead of time?

You could but personally it is so easy I typically will make it fresh however…..the dough does need to be chilled and could be left in the fridge for longer. You could prep it in the morning, wrap, keep in the fridge during the day and roll out in the evening after dinner to make your dessert. Another option is to form a few in disposable pie pans, wrap with foil and freeze to use for later.

Chocolate Pie Crust No Oreos
What is the secret to a good pie crust?

1. Use chilled or frozen and grated butter. The cold fat creates pockets of steam when baked, leading to a flaky texture.
2. Use ice water to keep the dough cold during mixing.
3. Avoid over-mixing the dough. Once the water is added, mix just until the dough holds together.
4. Wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to an hour. This relaxes the gluten and makes the dough easier to roll out.
5. Roll the dough evenly from the center outwards.

Chocolate Pie Crust Filling Ideas

At the end of the year it is fun to mix up the Old fashioned like pouring in our Gingerbread Cheesecake inside and having that duo which is actually quite delicious. Think outside of the box for a few of your other favorite pie recipes. Yes you could bake the crust as is, cool and add a pudding mixture but let’s go beyond that with;

  • Pumpkin Custard Pie is a fun twist with this type of base.
  • You can par-bake and then just pour in a can of cherry pie filling, chill and serve with whipped cream
  • If rolled out flat, sliced into chip sizes and left as is you could bake on a sheet pan to use to scoop up your favorite dessert dip!

Can You Make Pie Crust With Oreos?

We discuss how to make this in our Graham Cracker Crust for Cheesecake because it is the same instructions as if you used the honey versions. Eliminating the cream in the middle makes them just like any other cookie so you can swap out any kind you like really.

This is great for slicing into bars if you ask me. You could bring the mixture up on to the sides of your pie pan but it is easier to just press and get a nice thick base like this in a square pan like for our Copycat Philadelphia Cheesecake Bars here.

Equipment

  • 1 pie pan
  • 1 Bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 c all purpose flour
  • 7 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/3 c sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 4.5 oz butter, cold, shaved is best
  • 5 tbsp water, ice cold

Instructions

  • Place flour and cocoa in a bowl. Mix. Add sugar. Mix. Add cubes of cold cubed butter. Mix with a pastry cutter or back of a fork until you get a sand like crumb.
  • Add water a little at a time combining as you go. You may need less water than indicated to form a ball of dough. Put into a small bowl and cover with plastic wrap or wrap with parchment paper and fold over so it is not exposed to air. Refrigerate for 2 hours.
  • Remove from fridge and roll out on a very lightly floured surface so it is the same thickness all the way across. Place in a pie pan.
  • You can add the filling to the uncooked crust and bake according to your recipe instructions. Or this is How to Blind Bake first and then add a cold filling once it's cooled.
