devils food cake mix brownies

Have you ever made fudgy cake mix brownies?? They’re really easy and just as ooey gooey as if you used a traditional brownie boxed mix but you can really amp it up with lots of other flavors like making Nutella style as we did here! You can even add nuts!

Ok so we have used this same idea to made strawberry brownies too, and yes those were delicious as well. There are so many flavors to choose from this is just going to be the beginning….

Ever since then we’ve gone wild with cake mix recipes of all kinds and have even made cake mix donuts for fun too. This time I thought I’d add some Nutella because it’s such a fun nutty add in on sandwiches and just about anything really and let me tell you they turned out amazing!

First off, don’t follow the directions on the back of the box! Use our ingredients below. When done the key is to NOT overbake these beauties. You want to bake them just enough so the edges get golden brown and look like they’re getting somewhat cakey but the middle seems like it still will be underdone, that is when they are perfect!

Fudgy Cake Mix Brownies Ingredients

Devil’s food chocolate cake mix is the best one for this obviously but there are many brands out there. I suggest you pay the extra dollar or so for the name brand as there is a difference in the quality of the ingredients in mixes.

Your large Eggs should be at room temperature for the best outcome and whisked beforehand is even better.

You are going to want a bit of fat to make them ooey gooey. I used Oil but you could use canned pumpkin like we did with our brownies with pumpkin as a healthier option

A jar of Nutella is the key to making them fudgier I tell you, and adds more of a chocolate flavor to them with a hazelnut tweak too.

We are going to bake in a square 8×8 baking pan with non stick cooking spray or lined with parchment paper.

    Can you add chocolate chips?

Of course there are a number of add ins you can include like 1/4 cup crushed nuts, peanut butter chips are delicious, or semi-sweet chocolate chips will make them even more fudgy.

You can top with chocolate flavored syrup, cream cheese frosting or ice cream when done but I find no need for anything else, they are literally perfection!! You can bake them like you see here to make Crockpot brownies with them too.

How Long to Cook Fudgy Brownies with Cake Mix

Whether you make a cake or these out of this deep chocolate mix you do NOT want to bake it too long. You see how ours are still ooey gooey but not liquid and raw, perfection I tell you. 24 minutes is perfect for us but you can fool around with the timing your first go around and see how “well done” you want them the next time. I guarantee you won’t regret leaving them a bit underdone.

Should you let brownies cool in the pan?

Yes, you’re going to allow them to totally cool in the pan so it will continue to bake a bit while they’re sitting on your cooling rack and solidify a bit more in the middle.

We have other cake mix hacks here you can follow like adding an extra egg yolk if you are making a cake for richness or using hot water to bloom the cocoa. So many tips.

Can you bake cake mix brownies in air fryer?

Yes, you will just need to make two batches of our air fryer brownies from mix because the pan is smaller. They make really ooey gooey if taken out a bit early but if you like more of a cake like brownie then cook just a wee bit longer and you’ll love them too.

Of course you can immediately scoop your devils food brownies out of the pan immediately but they will kinda’ fall apart so if you want to be able to cut them into squares like this then wait until they are cool in the pan and then if you use non stick spray they will cut nicely and serve up pretty. How to Know When Brownies are Done

If you want them fudgy, they are done when the outsides are cracked and middle is starting to crack, slightly firm to the touch, and a toothpick comes out mostly clean but with moist crumbs attached when removed from the center. Always allow to cool in the pan on a cooling rack to continue to solidify before slicing.
For cakey you want the whole top to be cracked, firm to the touch in the center and toothpick comes out clean.

How do you cool brownies out of the pan?

If you want them really really fudgy, remove immediately. Easiest way to do this is initially line pan with parchment paper before adding batter. Then when done carefully lift it out of the pan to transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. If you prefer fudgier brownies, you can chill them in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before cutting. This helps to set the chocolate and creates a denser texture.

    1. This recipe is great! I’m planning on making it with the red velvet brownies recipe as well. If I ommit the nutella, will it affect the recipe other than flavor?

    2. I only want to make plain brownies using a Pillsbury devil’s food cake mix. What could I add to make them more like brownies instead of cake

    3. Just wondering if Hersheys Chocolate could be substituted for the Nutella and still turn out ok?
