What are white sweet potatoes?

Well, they are a type of white potato with a pale cream or white flesh instead of the usual orange hue. They belong to the same family as the orange variety like our orange Sweet Potato in the Air Fryer but they have some key differences beyond the color such as; they are less sweet, firmer, and has less vitamin A. The white sweet potatoes taste have more of a nutty flavor to them, sometimes they have a light purple skin too.

Next to our cubed sweet potatoes in oven they’re a family favorite we now make quite often because they are so versatile. You could even mash them at the end once tender if you preferred for a tweak on the old traditional side dish for holidays.

Ingredient Notes

We used a few pounds of white sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed with some olive oil will keep the outsides moist and a bit more spray at the end will get them to a deeper golden brown

As far as seasonings go I like Kosher salt and pepper are basics, tossed together with some garlic powder (onion powder works too). Paprika, smoked or regular type is a nice touch, with Old Bay.

If you like heat at all use a bit of cayenne, for spicy I would opt for dry sriracha or red pepper flakes instead

Variations

As far as the seasonings are concerned those are really up to you. I do suggest some for sure unless you just want the good ol’ natural flavors but at least salt and pepper. Don’t skip the oil because you need to keep them from drying out in the hot heat, avocado oil works too. You could follow the same steps for a purple sweet potatoes recipe too, or mix the two!

Cubed sweet potato seasoned and spread on a foil-lined baking sheet, ready to be baked—perfect as a protein-packed addition to any White Sweet Potato Recipe.

Baking Tips

If you wanted to cook these whole you would want to follow our baked red potatoes steps and timing. OR for a crispier version follow our Japanese Sweet Potato Cubes in Air Fryer. This one basically follows the same steps above but the temperature and timing using this smaller kitchen appliance. With high heat like this you will get a crispier outcome in less time.

In this case we are sharing how to bake these, cubed, in the oven for a basic how-to post. Once you get the hang of the flavor and texture (and love it) you can substitute them in other dishes like our Ground Beef Casserole with Potatoes from there….

  • Spread the potatoes in a single layer on a large baking tray with sides and place in the oven for 40 minutes. At the halfway point, stir and flip the cubes over so they roast evenly. Remove and garnish with fresh herb of choice (parsley shown) and serve while hot.

What to make with leftovers

Ok so I will say that reheating these won’t be an ideal texture. You can throw them into an air fryer at 400 for a minute or so but still they won’t crisp up well again. Your best bet really is to throw them into something else where it is meant to be softer like our Sweet Potato Chili Recipe. OR if you want to make it sweeter, during the holidays I will mash and make a batch of Sweet Potato Spoonbread with them. Jump to recipe and let us know what you think!
