How do You Make Hot Dogs in the Oven

Ok so we have experimented with all different brands including store brand all the way to Boars Head and the timing works the same. If yours are much larger and fatter you may have to add an extra minute or two. This way is great if you are feeding a crowd. As opposed to our Frozen Hot Dogs in Air Fryer you can make 2-3 packages at a time easily vs. just a few.

The second best way to make a lot at once is to follow our Instant Pot Hot Dogs, but those won’t have a nice crisp on the outside. This way gives it all to you. A plump but golden browned outside so the texture inside and out is absolutely perfect.

All you need are the dogs and a knife to get this done. Just like if you were making Toaster Oven Hot Dogs you’ll want to preheat ahead of time so the heat is level and hot from the start to the end. You don’t want them in when it is warming up or the timing will be off and the outside won’t get as browned.

It doesn’t take as long as How Long to Boil Hot Dogs either. Water typically takes a good 15 minutes to get to a consistent boiling vs. maybe 5 to heat to 400 degrees F. Once again, the texture is better than this method as they are just soft all the way around this way.

Just like with Microwaving hot dogs you will want to vent them. Potatoes require the same thing so they don’t explode. I mean they may not actually POW into a bunch of little pieces but will break in some capacity, maybe in half, or in a weird way once the steam starts to build up inside. Just use a knife or fork to poke a few times each.

When roasting hot dogs, the amount you can make really comes down to how large your baking sheet is. I have a few sizes. You can fill the whole thing with not a lot of space in between them as they won’t “grow” that much, just don’t overlap them.

How to Cook Wieners in the Oven

  • Pre-heat oven to 400 and line a baking sheet with foil. Set aside.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut lengthwise along the hot dog.
  • Make the cut about 1/3 of the way thru only so it can expand.
  • Place the hot dogs, cut side up, on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes (large kielbasa sizes may need to cook for 15 minutes) or until hot dogs are split open and the outside just begins to get crispy.
    • you could brush some hot dog mustard on them after 10 minutes to brown on
  • Remove from oven and serve immediately in hot dog buns.
    • if you wanted to toast them too, open, set on another pan with open side up for the last 4-5 minutes until lightly browned and crisped.
    • Can brush a bit of butter on the open side to get crisper.

How long to bake hot dogs at 400

You just need 10 minutes or so, so fast!! If you had leftovers at the end I would cool, save in a freezer bag in the fridge, and slice next day. Our favorite leftover hot dog recipe is Hot Dog Casserole!! A favorite dish for my kiddos that is super cheesy with noodles all baked together in one dish. A great potluck that is super popular to bring as well.

What is the best temperature to cook a hot dog?

400 degrees F is ideal if you ask us. You want it hot enough to really plump them up, heat into the very middle of each one and get the outsides browned nicely. We love that snap, I bet you do too. That means that the outer casing crisps up a bit so when you bite into it you can hear it pop a bit. 😉

How can you tell when hot dogs are done?

If boiled they will swell up to almost twice their size. On the stove, on the grill or in a pan on the stove the outsides will brown and start to shrivel up with an almost wrinkled look to them. You don’t want to cook too long or they will dry out so stay close and remove once the internal temperature reaches 140 degrees F.
