I have three daughters and over the years I aimed to make dinner time fun. I mean if food was fun they were more likely to try it, no matter what it was. That is when I came up with roll ups! Once you get the hang of them you can add all sorts of fillings inside.

Over the years we have tried all sorts of things from pizza roll ups and you could even fill the dough with sweetness to enjoy after your meal! Get the gist? I see you nodding so let’s talk about the most important part, the dough……

Pillsbury Cheesesteak Stromboli

There are two ways to make the outside that will hold all of your yummy goodies inside. I always go for the easy peasy version so we are going to pick up a tube of Pillsbury pizza dough to get this baby started. 😉 You could alternatively make your own.

Cheesesteak Ingredients

Ok so this go around we are going for a Philadelphia favorite, and there are classic ingredients you would expect to find in a sandwich like that though we have tweaked it to our liking. The one thing you won’t find in ours but you could certainly include would be slices of onions. We aren’t huge fans of those so they were left our, bell peppers are another option.

In this case our slices of steak are very thin and cooked before adding into the roll so we could make sure they were cooked thru and get even more tender when baked. I suggest you season it as you normally would, with at least salt and pepper and/or our steak dry rub.

Mozzarella cheese coats the top of that, lots of it, with a bit of provolone because a mix is mo’ better if you ask us. Shredded works best so it melts really evenly and ooey gooey like our Sloppy Joe Philly Cheesesteak.

Instead of hoagie rolls we are using rolled out dough with a simple egg wash on top so it gets that golden brown color and a bit shiny too.

If you wanted to make homemade pizza dough you would want to do that first since you may need time for it to rise a bit.

How Long to Bake Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli

In the oven when it is done it will take about 23 minutes or so to get the cheese melted all the way thru and the dough golden browned all over. Before that though it will take you about 5 minutes to precook the beef so let’s say a dinner in under 30 minutes and we love that.

Your best bet when done is to allow it to sit and rest for 5 minutes on the pan for the cheese to firm up just a bit and allow you to slice it with a little less mess. Now don’t expect it to be a bit of mess but that is what is expected with this classic comfort food right?/

How do you know when stromboli is done?

I have a picture for you below so you can see the browned color on the top you should expect. The meat will peek thru the holes at the top too and will look like steak should with clear juices. If it is lighter in color than this I would give it another minute and check again.

Dips we Love

Now fun doesn’t stop there at dinner time because you will want a dip for your slices!! Our favorites would be marinara, kids sometimes like ranch but I personally encourage you to make our Mustard Pretzel Dip!! OMG this pairing is out of this world y’all.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a skillet over medium high heat add olive oil. Season steak with garlic powder, salt and pepper and cook very thin slices of steak until browned, remove, set aside.

  • Top the steak with grated cheeses to cover. Fold the sides of the dough inward, then roll from one end to the other and seal so nothing leaks out.
  • Lay on baking sheet with sealed end facing down. Whisk egg and brush on top.
  • Cut 3 slits on the top to vent and bake for 20-25 minutes or until it is golden brown. Allow to sit on pan for 5 minutes before removing to a cutting board and slicing into pieces to serve with dipping sauce.
