This is the popular recipe on TikTok, you may have seen on social media. With chocolate chips, resting for a few days to deepen the flavors, this treat is easy and cheap to make with your kids at home. (affiliate links present)

Why are they called 100-hour brownies?

The term hundred hour brownies doesnโ€™t refer to a specific type of recipe or a particular baking technique but rather how long it sits before eating. The idea of it is that over time the chocolate flavor will deepen and become stronger over time. Waiting 3-4 days wrapped tightly so they donโ€™t dry out before taking a bite is the new rage everywhere.

You could do this with our Hot Fudge Brownie Bread too. Most times with this one we will enjoy fresh, and in days later. In this case you can tell the difference in the depth of flavor over time I will say that. Wrapped tight to stay moist it is an interesting experiment to see how many days of resting is ideal for your family.

You could use our Homemade Brownie Mix too for this if you wanted. Make this often? Just make and package the dry ingredients of this in baggies so there is less prep work for you going forward. Nuts can be added of course too if you like. I prefer nut-free desserts because of the texture but that is up to you.

If you wanted the immediate deeper flavor in a smaller batch you could use this technique with our air fryer brownies timing. Alvin zhou made a version that was semi-homemade on Tasty so there are several versions you can make to start with. If you have a browned butter recipe go with that. It is the resting time that differentiates this.

How many days in advance can I make these?

If you plan to consume these or our black bean brownies you should within 1-2 days, you can store them at room temperature in an airtight container or a sealed plastic bag. Be sure to allow them to cool completely before storing to prevent moisture buildup. For best results, slice and wrap each one tight in saran wrap and then store in freezer bag.

Refrigerator Brownies

These can be stored in the refrigerator for an extended period compared to room temperature. Place them in an airtight container or wrap them tightly in plastic wrap to prevent them from drying out. They should remain fresh for up to 3-4 days in the refrigerator.

Freezing Brownies

If you want to prep them well in advance, you can freeze them. First, allow the brownies to cool completely. Then, cut them into individual portions or squares and wrap each piece tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Place wrapped in an airtight container or a freezer-safe bag, removing as much air as possible. Properly stored, they can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.

How to frost these

That is personal preference. You could add Brownie Frosting to the top of each piece if you wanted to as well. I suggest if you plan on making this that you add right when it is served or it gets yucky. Keep in a sealed container in the fridge and with each slice, add a bit on top.

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 325ยฐF. Grease andline a 9ร—13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.Once melted, remove from heat and stir in the sugar until well combined. Let it cool for about 5-10 minutes.
  • Beat the eggs into the butter-sugar mixture, one at a time, until fully incorporated. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt in a separate bowl. Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Fold in the chocolate chips (and nuts, if using). Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30-33 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  • Remove the brownies from the oven and let them cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, cover the pan tightly with foil or plastic wrap and let the brownies rest at room temperature for 100 hours (about 3-4 days). This extended resting time allows the flavors to deepen and intensify.
  • After the 100 hours are up, carefully lift the brownies out of the pan using the parchment paper overhang. Cut the brownies into squares and serve. Note: These brownies are best stored in an airtight container at room temperature and can last for up to a week.
