Our school, as well as many others around, use a reading program called Accelerated Reader (AR we call it). Others use different systems but many of them are quite similar in the way they rank books according to a child’s reading level and comprehension. I have three children and once they hit the second grade they were tested, assigned a color according to their reading level, and chose books in that color (colors typically shown with a sticker on the spine as you see here). Once they are done with their book they can take tests on the computer that test their comprehension of the book and if they pass they earn points, they love that!
Well as a parent when your first child comes home and says “I’m a yellow reader,” you aren’t quite sure what that means. After some time you learn a bit about AR, but being as though it is a school program it is hard to know what books you should be buying for your child to read at home (that was my question anyway). There is more extensive information about the AR program here if you want to go into depth. I was curious to find books in my children’s levels so…….I went searching.
If you are curious, and haven’t sen the levels before, the color chart is shown above. The number correlates to the level reader they are. For example, my daughter is in the first grade yet she is a “yellow reader”, meaning she is reading at a 2.6-3.0 grade level (second grade in the 6th month of school to 3rd grade reading level). Most children don’t participate in Accelerated Reading until the second grade so if yours are in Kinder or first you may not have encountered this yet but you will and you can keep this as a resource for yourself next year.
Teachers usually have libraries in their classrooms with rows upon rows of books with different colors so there are great choices for each leveled reader. Each series is typically the same level. Such as, most Junie B. Jones books are in the yellow level (yes, I hear about this curious girl every day!), but some are not such as some of the Magic Treehouse books you see here….some are in the yellow category and some are in the pink level (slightly different).
Here are some popular chapter book series in each level. Great for Christmas presents, stocking stuffers too, as it’s always fun to get a new book and finding one in their reading level is best so they aren’t frustrated or choosing something that is below their ability.
Click on the box / book in the intended level to search books in that color and purchase (affiliate links, thank you for supporting this site).
Light Blue Level .1-1.5
Light Green 1.6-2.0
Bright Orange 2.1-2.5
Dark Blue 4.6-5.0
Dark Green 5.1-6.9
I always create a Night Before Christmas Box for my children every year. I always include a pair of new pajamas in the box for each child, and decided to get them a pair of Elf on the Shelf pajamas this year! Even though they don’t get them ’til the night before Christmas in their box, they love wearing their new pair the rest of the winter because it reminds them of that day and Christmas time. I get double use out of them because my youngest gets to wear her sisters pair the next winter too (I am sure many of you can hand down sets too, thus the unisex pair is great if you have girls and boys). We love The Elf on the Shelf, great tradition!

I have three active girls who play sports, love to be with their friends, and have sleepovers too….sounds familiar right??! Well, when my youngest daughter is invited over to someone’s house she’s a little more nervous than most because she has troubles staying dry throughout the night. But…..let me tell you about the newest product we found that made it all so much better, Goodnites* TRU-FIT* underwear! Special thanks to GoodNites* TRU-FIT* for sponsoring this post and thus allowing us to share our story with you!
We found these cute machine-washable underwear with an absorbent insert at Target today (plus it had a $2 off coupon attached to the front which is a huge plus), made for children just like my 6 year old who has a bit of trouble staying dry at night. There were plenty of cute styles to choose from and since they look just like big kid underwear, but have the added protection she needs at night to stay dry, we decided to give them a whirl!
These GoodNites* TRU-FIT* are machine-washable real underwear with a disposable absorbent insert inside, genius! So as she wears them they are just like her regular undies she wears during the day, but will help keep her dry at night because of the inserts leakage protection, I was sold on the idea. Anything that will help her become more confident around her friends is a winner of an idea.
I brought them home, explained how these worked and how she wouldn’t look any different from her other buddies as she spent the night at her upcoming sleepover and she smiled. In the past she would slip into the bathroom right before bed, and need to slip on something that resembled a diaper, but not now. She tried them on immediately.
As you can see, even under her jeans (she HAD to try them on to see what they felt and looked like under her regular clothes when I brought them home) you would never know there is a protective layer under there. What is great about GoodNites* TRU-FIT* underwear is that they are machine washable. In the past, we had a trash can full of bulky diaper like pants for the night time, but now it is just the insert that is thrown away and the undies you just toss into the washer.
In the morning, the sheets and PJs are dry which leaves a smile on my face as laundry is not my favorite thing to do! My daughter was much more confident at her last slumber party amongst her friends, and I’m loving this new product as it saves me time in the laundry room! It’s the little things in life that put a smile on our faces right.
This is seriously the hottest toy in 2014, and I am so glad it is! It is a simple interactive, fun game kids love! Just swing the ball up and try to either make it rest on either side (slightly curved in to catch ball), or try the harder task of getting it on the thin wooden peg on the top (it is on there now as you see here). Great “game” to get kids moving and thinking.
I love Hobby Lobby, especially during the Holidays!! Last year I found ceramic ornaments that looked just like the expensive ones they personalize at the mall for under $6 and with a sharpie I personalized them myself for my girls….they have such great crafting stuff to make the Holidays fun. Here is the latest Hobby Lobby coupon I have found to save you money. Use it as a printable coupon or show them this and they can use the coupon code shown at the register.
Great deal to enjoy the L.A. Times paper for the whole year for just $10.00. Lots of coupons each week in the Sunday edition, so it will pay for itself in just a week or two!! These deals don’t come along often at all so grab it and run!! Enjoy & share with others!
